Testrail information

What is TestRail?

TestRail is a web-based test case management tool used by quality assurance (QA) teams to organize and manage software testing efforts. It allows teams to create, manage, and track test cases, test runs, and test results efficiently. TestRail integrates with popular issue tracking and automation tools, making it easier to collaborate on testing activities and report on the quality of software releases.

What are the main responsibilities of a TestRail administrator?

A TestRail Administrator is responsible for configuring and maintaining the TestRail test management platform, ensuring it aligns with the organization's QA workflows. They manage user access, customize project settings, integrate TestRail with other tools like Jira or CI/CD systems, and provide support to QA team members. Administrators often create templates, manage test suites, and generate reports to help teams track progress and quality metrics. Collaboration with QA engineers, developers, and project managers is frequent to ensure the system enables efficient and effective testing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TestRail administrator?

To thrive as a TestRail Administrator, you need a strong understanding of software testing principles, experience with test management processes, and familiarity with QA methodologies, often backed by relevant IT or QA certifications. Proficiency in using TestRail, integration with tools like Jira, and basic scripting knowledge for automation are typically required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and clear communication help ensure effective collaboration and accurate documentation. These skills are crucial for maintaining structured testing environments, improving team efficiency, and supporting high-quality software delivery.

Job description

  • Direct AI agents to generate, execute, and maintain the majority of automated test coverage, using Playwright with JavaScript/Node.js as the underlying framework
  • Design and refine prompting strategies and agentic workflows that reduce manual test-writing over time
  • Apply human judgment where agents fall short edge cases, flaky results, and coverage gaps that need a person to catch them
  • Own test case documentation, execution, and reporting in TestRail
  • Track work and defects in Jira
  • Use Git and contribute to agent-driven test automation running in GitHub Actions as our CI/CD process matures
  • Weigh in on API testing strategy, even in areas where day-to-day ownership sits with someone else
  • Juggle a shifting mix of project work, defect response, and ongoing improvements without dropping the ball on any of it
  • Give clear, proactive updates on testing status, risk, and blockers, to your team and to leadership
  • Work with product, dev, and QA to nail down scope, acceptance criteria, and what "good enough" actually means
  • Mentor junior developers through code review, test design, and automation practices as they grow into more dev-focused work including how to work effectively with AI agents themselves
  • Actively pilot and give feedback on agentic AI tools as part of an early-stage rollout, helping shape how the team adopts them
  • Help shape test strategy and automation architecture as agents take on more of the day-to-day testing load
Requirements
  • Hands-on Playwright experience
  • Strong JavaScript/Node.js skills
  • TestRail (or similar test case management tool) experience
  • Jira experience for tracking work and defects
  • Working knowledge of Git
  • Comfort directing or prompting AI tools to do work you'd otherwise do by hand and knowing when to step in
  • You can explain a gnarly technical issue to a non-technical exec and to a fellow engineer, and know how to adjust for each
  • Track record of managing competing priorities not just tolerating ambiguity, but working well in it
  • Comfort with a role that isn't fully defined yet and will keep evolving
Core Competencies

Demonstrates expertise in automated testing using Playwright with JavaScript/Node.js, along with strong capabilities in test case management and defect tracking. Proficient in mentoring junior developers and adapting to evolving roles while managing competing priorities effectively.
