What is a testing manager?

Testing Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the software testing process within an organization. They coordinate test teams, develop testing strategies, and ensure that products meet quality standards before release. Their duties include planning and managing test activities, allocating resources, tracking defects, and communicating progress to stakeholders. Testing Managers play a critical role in ensuring that software products are reliable, functional, and delivered on time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a testing manager?

To thrive as a Testing Manager, you need expertise in software testing methodologies, quality assurance processes, and a background in computer science or a related field, often supported by certifications like ISTQB. Familiarity with test management tools (such as JIRA, TestRail), automation frameworks, and CI/CD systems is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help effectively manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality software products and efficient testing processes in complex development environments.

What are some common challenges a testing manager may face when coordinating testing activities across multiple teams?

A Testing Manager often encounters challenges such as aligning testing schedules with development timelines, ensuring consistent testing standards across distributed teams, and managing communication between stakeholders. Balancing resource allocation and adapting to shifting project priorities can also present difficulties. Building strong relationships with development, QA, and product teams is crucial for effective collaboration and maintaining high-quality deliverables.

  • Manage the integration pipeline across new client implementations, existing client requirements, partner initiatives, and integration enhancements, ensuring priorities, dependencies, risks, and target dates are clearly understood.
  • Work closely with Onboarding to align integration delivery with client implementation timelines and proactively identify technical requirements or dependencies that could impact a successful launch.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Development and Development to align integration requirements with evolving product capabilities, identify technical dependencies, and support ongoing product improvements.
  • Assess timeline feasibility and Development capacity for upcoming integration work, providing realistic delivery expectations and supporting short- and long-term resource and capacity planning.
  • Lead technical discovery and scoping, defining requirements, data flows, dependencies, deliverables, responsibilities, risks, and implementation timelines.
  • Translate client and business requirements into clear integration specifications and coordinate delivery across Development, Infrastructure, clients, PMS partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the design, implementation, and enhancement of REST API and SOAP-based integrations and ensure appropriate standards for security, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Work effectively within an Agile/Scrum environment, supporting sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and delivery of integration development work.

  • Monitor production integrations and lead the investigation and resolution of complex integration issues, coordinating internal and external resources as required.
  • Maintain clear integration documentation, technical specifications, data mappings, testing requirements, troubleshooting procedures, and partner documentation.
  • Develop reusable standards, processes, templates, and testing approaches to improve the consistency and efficiency of integration delivery.
  • Build strong relationships with PMS and technology partners and stay informed of API changes, platform updates, certifications, and other developments that may impact our integrations.
  • Define and evolve a long-term integrations strategy that supports company growth, new PMS partnerships, greater standardization, and a scalable integration architecture.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to use AI and automation to improve integration scoping, development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, monitoring, and overall delivery efficiency.
  • Provide regular visibility to leadership and stakeholders on pipeline status, capacity, delivery timelines, risks, dependencies, and integration performance.

Job Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in software integrations, API integrations, technical implementation, solutions engineering, SaaS, or a related technical role, including experience managing complex integration projects from discovery through production launch.

  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, SOAP-based web services, system integrations, data flows, authentication methods, and structured data formats such as JSON, XML, and CSV.
  • Experience working with C# and the .NET platform, with a strong understanding of software development and integration architecture.
  • Experience using API development and testing tools such as Postman, Swagger/OpenAPI, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Experience working within an Agile/Scrum development environment, with a good understanding of sprint planning, backlog management, prioritization, and delivery processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a pipeline of technical projects, assess dependencies and resource capacity, establish realistic delivery timelines, and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate Development resources and multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with experience testing, validating, and resolving complex integration and data issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively across Onboarding, Product Development, Development, clients, and external partners.
