What is a test manager?

A test manager works in a software development and quality assurance setting, managing testing projects and resources to ensure that software works correctly before being released to the public. Your chief responsibilities and duties are to oversee a team of software quality assurance testers throughout the development life cycle, design and implement testing strategies, create reports and analyses of your tests, and present your findings to software developers and management. You are also responsible for hiring new testers, building your team, and helping to mentor and monitor junior testers.

What are some common challenges test managers face when coordinating testing across multiple teams or projects?

Test Managers often navigate challenges such as aligning testing schedules, managing resource constraints, and ensuring consistent quality standards across diverse teams or projects. Effective communication and implementing standardized testing processes are key to overcoming these obstacles. Additionally, they must frequently balance shifting project priorities and resolve dependencies or conflicts between development and testing teams. Leveraging strong leadership and collaborative skills helps Test Managers ensure seamless test execution and project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Manager, you need deep knowledge of software testing methodologies, quality assurance processes, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools (such as Jira, HP ALM, or TestRail), automation frameworks, and certifications like ISTQB are highly valued. Strong leadership, excellent communication, and problem-solving skills help coordinate teams and bridge gaps between stakeholders. These abilities ensure effective test planning, high product quality, and successful delivery in complex software projects.

Job description

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences-from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you'll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world's most important challenges-striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

Responsibilities

THE ROLE:Join a high-impact firmware validation team working on cutting-edge AMD EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs powering next-generation data center and enterprise platforms. In this role, you will help shape how firmware is validated across both pre-silicon (simulation) and post-silicon environments by building scalable, automation-ready test solutions. You'll collaborate closely with firmware architects, SoC design teams, and validation engineers to define test strategies, improve coverage, and ensure system reliability from boot through runtime. This is a highly collaborative environment where you'll gain exposure to end-to-end platform behavior while driving innovative approaches to testing, including modern automation techniques and AI-assisted tooling. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware and firmware, influence validation methodologies, and contribute to the success of complex server-class platforms at scale.

THE PERSON:You are a hands-on problem solver who enjoys digging into low-level system behavior and building reliable, repeatable test solutions. You thrive in a collaborative environment and communicate effectively across cross-functional teams. You take pride in creating clear, actionable debug artifacts and are motivated to close gaps quickly through data-driven decisions. You are naturally curious, challenge the status quo, and look for smarter, more efficient ways to validate complex systems. You bring a strong sense of ownership and are excited to continuously learn and innovate, including exploring new tooling and automation approaches.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Define and implement firmware test strategies in partnership with architects and cross-functional teams Design and develop end-to-end test flows validating firmware across boot and runtime environments Build automation-ready test solutions that run in both simulation (pre-silicon) and hardware (post-silicon) environments Analyze feature-level verification requirements and develop test plans for next-generation platforms Execute tests, debug failures, and collaborate with firmware teams to drive defect resolution Generate high-quality debug artifacts (logs, register dumps, system captures) to support efficient triage Contribute to improving simulation environments to enable broader pre-silicon validation coverage Enhance test infrastructure to improve coverage, execution efficiency, and reporting workflows

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience in firmware, software development, or system validation/test development Strong foundation in computer architecture and server platform features Hands-on experience with SoC validation, system bring-up, or low-level debugging Experience developing tests for pre-silicon environments and working with simulation/emulation platforms (e.g., Simics or similar) Proficiency in C/C++ and scripting with Python, Perl, or Bash Experience or exposure to one or more of the following:

  • BIOS / UEFI concepts (ACPI, SMBIOS, DXE)
  • RAS features and validation
  • Memory subsystem validation
  • Power management and telemetry
  • Platform security (TPM, Secure Boot, SPDM, etc.)
  • Virtualization technologies (SR-IOV, ACPI)
  • High-speed I/O (PCIe, CXL)
  • Sideband protocols (MCTP, PLDM, SPDM, etc.)

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS: Bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science.

LOCATION: Markham On or Austin TX
