Test Engineer Manager information

What is a test engineer manager?

A Test Engineer Manager is a professional who oversees a team of test engineers responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. They coordinate testing activities, develop test strategies, manage resources, and communicate with other departments to meet project goals. In addition to technical oversight, they are responsible for mentoring team members, setting performance goals, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Test Engineer Manager vs Test Engineer?

AspectTest Engineer ManagerTest Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Engineering or related field; often leadership experienceBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
Work EnvironmentLeads testing teams, manages projects, collaborates with multiple departmentsPerforms testing tasks, executes test plans, reports issues
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in software, hardware, and manufacturing industries for overseeing testing teamsCommonly employed in similar industries for executing testing activities

The Test Engineer Manager oversees testing teams and manages testing projects, requiring leadership skills and experience. In contrast, the Test Engineer focuses on executing testing tasks and reporting issues. Both roles are essential in quality assurance, but the manager has additional responsibilities in team and project management.

How does a test engineer manager typically collaborate with development and QA teams to ensure product quality?

A Test Engineer Manager plays a key role in bridging the gap between development and QA teams by facilitating communication, aligning testing strategies with project goals, and ensuring that feedback loops are efficient. They often hold regular meetings to discuss progress, address roadblocks, and prioritize testing efforts based on development timelines. Additionally, they may help implement automated testing frameworks and oversee the integration of new QA tools, fostering an environment where both teams can work closely to deliver high-quality products on schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer manager?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and leadership experience, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), test management systems, and relevant certifications like ISTQB is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help you effectively coordinate testing teams and deliver high-quality results. These competencies ensure reliable product releases, efficient team performance, and alignment with organizational quality standards.

Job description

We are at the beginning of a global energy transformation of a scale not seen in generations. A future low-cost, low-carbon electric grid, serving a world that electrifies everything, is within our reach.

The last remaining gap is breaking the link between electricity supply and demand. The lowest-cost, most sustainable sources of energy today come from intermittent renewable generation; but our homes, businesses and industries need electricity at the flick of a switch.

That gap can be closed by energy storage: Devices that store electricity when it is plentiful, then provide power back to the grid when it is needed. Solutions, including ones using lithium-ion batteries, are being deployed in massive numbers to start filling this gap. But so far, none of those solutions have proven the ability to deliver power any time, anywhere, over decades of service: The level of reliability we've come to expect, and that the future grid will need.

This is the biggest challenge in energy today. Invinity is at the forefront of finding a solution. And we need you to help us deliver it.

Developed, manufactured and delivered by our teams in Canada and the UK, Invinity's vanadium flow batteries (or "VFBs") can be installed anywhere and consistently deliver electricity as needed over a service life exceeding 30 years. Moreover, Invinity's VFBs are highly recyclable, don't rely on rare or conflict minerals, and won't catch fire.

Invinity is a global VFB leader, with over 190 megawatt-hours of its batteries operational or in construction  for over 82 projects across 15 countries - more than any other emerging energy storage provider. We've deployed the largest flow battery systems in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK. Along the way we've earned financial support from the UK Infrastructure Bank, the U.S. Department of Energy, and some of the world's leading institutional investors.

In this role as Battery Test Engineer, Unit Cell R&D, reporting to the Manager, Unit Cell R&D in the Technology Team, you will work with an international, collaborative team to research, develop and verify new unit cell technologies. You are familiar with testing requirements from flow batteries or other relevant electrochemical devices such as PEM fuel cells or electrolysers. You have a solid understanding of engineering and DOE principles, data analysis, and accelerated lifetime test methodologies and can effectively present your work with strong communication and interpersonal skills. You enjoy hands-on work and apply strong structured problem solving and troubleshooting skills

Purpose of the Role:
  • Support the testing team in all aspects of the process, from mechanical to electrical, and concept through execution. You goal will be to ensure the quality, accuracy, and repeatability of test data to help drive data-based decisions.

  • Support the testing team in design, fabrication, calibration and commissioning of test equipment to ensure it is safe and fit for purpose.

  • Procure all necessary tools and materials required for fabrication, assembly, and testing processes.

  • Execute assigned tests, ensuring all procedures and safety practices are followed while delivering quality data to the internal customers in a timely manner.

  • Maintain and make available proper documentation of test equipment, results, and data in the correct locations.

  • Troubleshoot any issues that arise with test equipment and perform preventive maintenance tasks. This includes identifying and resolving equipment malfunctions, calibrating instruments, and ensuring proper function of the testing apparatus.

  • Contribute to the development of new test equipment and collaborate with the engineering team to provide input, suggest improvements, and help to validate the effectiveness of new testing systems.

  • Share your ideas, suggestions, and efforts to enhance efficiency, optimize processes, reduce waste.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • 3+ years experience working hands-on in product / R&D laboratory or test facility (flow battery or fuel cell test experience a plus).

  • Understanding of instrumentation, control automation, and data acquisition systems

  • Hands-on experience in test station design and modification or similar.

  • You develop good relationships with team members and managers.

  • Applied knowledge and basic problem-solving techniques to define and resolve problems.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or similar subject.

  • Electrical engineering knowledge and hands on skills (e.g. test station wiring) an asset.

$110,000 - $125,000 a year
At Invinity Energy Systems, we are dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals and practicing wage transparency to ensure fairness and equity. The salary for this position ranges from $110,000 to $125,000 and will be determined by a combination of the interview process, prior work experience, and educational background.

If you are great at what you do, willing to engage with our collaborative culture, and motivated by making a difference in the world, consider joining us. Invinity Energy Systems is small enough that every team member plays a critical role in our daily business, but large enough to participate in landmark clean energy projects around the world.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
