What is a test engineer manager?

A Test Engineer Manager is a professional who oversees a team of test engineers responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. They coordinate testing activities, develop test strategies, manage resources, and communicate with other departments to meet project goals. In addition to technical oversight, they are responsible for mentoring team members, setting performance goals, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer manager?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and leadership experience, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), test management systems, and relevant certifications like ISTQB is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help you effectively coordinate testing teams and deliver high-quality results. These competencies ensure reliable product releases, efficient team performance, and alignment with organizational quality standards.

How does a test engineer manager typically collaborate with development and QA teams to ensure product quality?

A Test Engineer Manager plays a key role in bridging the gap between development and QA teams by facilitating communication, aligning testing strategies with project goals, and ensuring that feedback loops are efficient. They often hold regular meetings to discuss progress, address roadblocks, and prioritize testing efforts based on development timelines. Additionally, they may help implement automated testing frameworks and oversee the integration of new QA tools, fostering an environment where both teams can work closely to deliver high-quality products on schedule.

What is the difference between Test Engineer Manager vs Test Engineer?

Job description

Who We Are:

Inversion builds advanced reentry systems to deliver next-generation capabilities from space.
Our mission is to make Earth radically more accessible by turning Low-Earth Orbit into an on-demand logistics domain. We see space not as a destination, but as a platform - one that unlocks unprecedented speed and global reach.
Our spacecraft are designed to deliver payloads anywhere on Earth in under an hour, operating through extreme reentry conditions and landing with high precision. These systems open the door to new ways of testing, delivering, and operating at hypersonic speeds.
Inherently dual-use, our technology is built to meet urgent national security needs while laying the groundwork for future commercial applications. Backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, and working with partners such as the U.S. Space Force and NASA, Inversion is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in space-based defense and logistics.

What You'll Doย

In this role, you will own the electrical validation, functional testing, and environmental verification of the entire Arc avionics suite. You will bridge the gap between design and flight readiness, developing bench tests, configuring complex Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments, and design-to-build electrical ground support equipment (GSE). Operating with high autonomy, you will define verification methodologies, lead debug efforts for hardware-to-softwareย interfaces, andย ensure the vehicle electronics function flawlessly under simulated flight conditions.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Own the design, build, and operational execution of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds and bench-level automated test setups for the Arc vehicle.ย
  • Develop and release vehicle-level avionics functional test plans, verification procedures, and automated test scripts to validate electrical power, computers, and RF subsystems.ย
  • Design and manufacture electrical Ground Support Equipment (GSE), breakout boxes, and custom test cables required for vehicle checkout.ย
  • Perform system-level electrical integration testing, signal mapping, and bus health analysis for communication networks (CAN, Ethernet, Serial, SPI, I2C).ย
  • Analyze avionics telemetry and sensor data during execution of simulated flight profiles to ensure hardware conforms to technical performance margins.ย
  • Lead the investigation and troubleshooting of electrical failures, telemetry drops, and hardware-software anomalies discovered during test campaigns.ย
  • Define environmental qualification test plans (thermal vacuum, vibration, shock, EMI/EMC) specifically tailored for avionics flight hardware.ย
  • Mentor junior test engineers, standardizing data-driven analysis techniques and automated test suite architectures.ย

Required Qualificationsย

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret/Top Secret security clearance.
