What is a test engineer manager?

A Test Engineer Manager is a professional who oversees a team of test engineers responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. They coordinate testing activities, develop test strategies, manage resources, and communicate with other departments to meet project goals. In addition to technical oversight, they are responsible for mentoring team members, setting performance goals, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer manager?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and leadership experience, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), test management systems, and relevant certifications like ISTQB is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help you effectively coordinate testing teams and deliver high-quality results. These competencies ensure reliable product releases, efficient team performance, and alignment with organizational quality standards.

Job description

Change the world. Love your job.
Test is a crucial time in an IC development process; if you find a bug or an issue, it is a good time to fix it, but every additional second of testing we do, is additional cost when you scale a device into production. So, test engineers must identify the critical points of the device where testing is most necessary and the points where we may want to take some risk. It is a precise balance, that has the potential to save our businesses millions of dollars!
Test engineers spend a good amount of time in the lab and when they're not there, they are designing test hardware using software tools like cadence and building test programs on an ATE simulator, or troubleshooting - the programs or the device.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in Product/Test engineering role.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with ATE programming (ETS364 preferred).
  • Proficiency with specific data analysis applications (e.g., SpotFire DXP, MBayse).
  • Experience in semiconductor device testing and troubleshooting.
  • Enthusiastic and curious mindset.
  • Proven history of technical accomplishments.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and implementing innovative analog test standards, processes, and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with GaN technology and associated test methods.
  • Project management, time management, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a global environment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing robustness validation techniques.
  • Experience in analyzing test data and presenting findings effectively.
  • Experience in developing ATE corrective actions for customer returns.
  • Advanced understanding of semiconductor device fundamentals.
  • Advanced level of understanding and use of ATE.
  • Advanced level of engineering statistics and statistical distribution analysis.
  • Self-starter with willingness to learn new things.
  • Experience in optimizing production test programs while maximizing test coverage on ATE.
  • Experience in driving innovative test standards to improve quality and reliability (improve DPPM).
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage complex projects.
  • Experience building and maintaining working relationships with various teams (SBE, Quality, FAB, and Assembly sites).
