Job description
Description Do Great Things. Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor in the English for Academic Purposes/Continuing Education for the NNES department. The Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management.
The instructor will work closely with his or her supervisor and other discipline or cross-discipline faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the EAP/Con. Ed. NNES department and its students.
"Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the posting may close without notice." Examples of Duties Teach all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, hybrid, academic success, and/or interdisciplinary capstone courses as needed at any of Durham Tech's instructional sites both in the EAP and continuing education programs. Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accord with the stated objectives of the course Enforce academic policies and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations. Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and college
Serve as educational advisor and assist with placement for new and current students, participating in semester advising and registration activities for EAP advisees and students in continuing education programs. Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, committees, and other special appointments. Assist in the revision and development of curriculum and continuing education course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation and in the identification, development, preview, and acquisition of educational resources and supplies required to meet program objectives and improve instruction.
Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms. Attend training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field of instruction. Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the director, executive director, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college.
Assume responsibility for classroom preparation, including maintenance and cleanup, and recommend, as necessary, appropriate supplies and equipment. Assist with advising health and wellness students as it relates to the English language requirement (listening/speaking skills). Must complete mandatory training.
Minimum Qualifications Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or in a related field; OR Master's degree with a TESOL certification and Work Experience of a minimum of three years teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language to adults. Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in TESOL Supplemental Information Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge of a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments Physical Demands: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
