Terminal Automation information

What is terminal automation?

Terminal automation refers to the use of technology and software systems to control, monitor, and optimize operations at transportation terminals, such as ports, airports, or logistics hubs. This can include automating processes like cargo handling, equipment management, scheduling, and data collection. The goal is to improve efficiency, safety, and reliability while reducing manual labor and operational costs. Terminal automation systems often integrate with other logistics technologies to provide real-time visibility and advanced analytics.

How does a terminal automation specialist typically interact with operations and IT teams to ensure smooth system performance?

Terminal Automation specialists play a crucial role in bridging the gap between operational staff and IT teams. They collaborate closely with operations to understand workflow requirements and troubleshoot real-time system issues, while also working with IT to implement software updates and maintain network integrity. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are key, as these specialists often coordinate training sessions, document automation procedures, and ensure that all stakeholders are aligned with new initiatives. This collaborative environment helps maintain efficient terminal operations and minimizes downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a terminal automation role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Terminal Automation role, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, control systems, and industrial automation, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with PLC/SCADA systems, DCS platforms, and terminal management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this position. These skills ensure that automated terminal operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.

What is the difference between Terminal Automation vs Terminal Operator?

AspectTerminal AutomationTerminal Operator
CredentialsTechnical certifications, automation system trainingHigh school diploma, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentControl rooms, technical settings, monitoring systemsPhysical terminals, loading/unloading areas
Industry UsageDesign, maintain, and improve automation systemsOperate equipment, manage cargo handling
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on automation technology and systemsFocus on manual operations and logistics

Terminal Automation involves managing and maintaining automated systems in port terminals, requiring technical skills and certifications. Terminal Operators physically handle cargo and operate equipment, often with on-the-job training. Both roles are essential in port operations but differ in responsibilities, environment, and skill requirements.

  • Integrate and configure system components, including RF, network, and mechanical interfaces.
  • Reference an Indentured Drawing List (IDL) and corresponding Bill of Materials (BOM) to support test planning and execution.
  • Set up and operate specialized test equipment for antenna system validation.
  • Lead customer witnessed Factory and Production acceptance testing, where you will be the in-factory representative of Viasat—showcasing system performance and maintaining strong customer relationships.
  • Support network setup and configuration tasks vital to bring system devices online.
  • Prepare and present technical reports summarizing integration and test results and any corrective actions identified.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of procedures and documentation to complete in-house or on-site antenna system integration and testing.
  • Provide remote support to Viasat integration engineers or contractors that are in the field performing antenna system commissioning.

What you'll need

  • 2+ years of experience in system testing, integration, and commissioning of RF systems, antenna systems, or satellite communication terminals
  • System-Level Verification: Capability to work both independently and with System Engineers to verify performance at the system level, ensuring the integrated product meets all requirements.
  • Visual Comprehension: Proficiency in reviewing and reading various IEEE standardized wiring diagrams, schematics, mechanical drawings, and block diagrams.
  • Range Testing: Experience with outdoor integration ranges and pattern ranges, including understanding FCC license coverage for these facilities.
  • Electrical Theory and Safety: Understanding and alignment to industrial and site electrical safety standard and Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures, as well as knowledge in multi-phase AC power systems and DC circuitry.
  • Networking Knowledge: Ability to diagnose network or connectivity issues via TCP/IP tools and communicate to devices through various communication interfaces (SSH, SNMP, UDP, serial, etc.)
  • Test Equipment Familiarity: Deep technical proficiency in microwave analyzers, power meters, and signal generator, as well as skilled in using Digital Multimeters (DMM) and Oscilloscopes to diagnose DC/AC conditions.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to develop clear, coordinated, and efficient test and integration procedures for complex system scenarios in alignment with specified system performance requirements.
  • Fixing: Critical problem-solving skills to resolve multifaceted integration issues on-site or through remote-access.
  • RF Theory: Experience with testing RF systems including G/T, EIRP, and BERT coupled with understanding of S21, S11, VSWR, system gain, and frequency conversion.
  • Servo and System Control: Deep understanding of feedback mechanisms including encoders or resolvers, familiarity with high-rate, real-time servo communication protocols, and industrial system control I/O.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills to coordinate integration and test activities with customers, site technicians, and internal teams
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Ability to work on-site at our Duluth, GA facility
  • Up to 10% travel.

What will help you on the job
