Tenant Screening information

What is tenant screening?

Tenant screening is the process landlords and property managers use to evaluate prospective renters before offering them a lease. This process typically includes checking an applicant’s credit history, criminal background, rental history, and employment status. The goal is to assess the applicant's reliability and ability to pay rent on time, as well as to minimize the risk of property damage or eviction. Tenant screening helps ensure a safe and secure rental environment for all parties involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tenant screening specialist?

To thrive as a Tenant Screening Specialist, you need a strong understanding of fair housing laws, attention to detail, and experience in reviewing credit reports and background checks. Familiarity with property management software, screening platforms, and compliance protocols is typically required. Excellent communication, discretion, and customer service skills help build trust with property managers and prospective tenants. These skills ensure accurate, lawful evaluations and foster positive relationships, minimizing risk for property owners.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in tenant screening, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in tenant screening often encounter challenges like verifying the authenticity of applicant information, navigating privacy laws, and handling high volumes of applications during peak rental seasons. Addressing these challenges requires attention to detail, effective use of screening tools and databases, and staying updated on Fair Housing and data protection regulations. Collaboration with property managers and leasing agents is also crucial to ensure that screening decisions are fair, consistent, and comply with legal requirements.

What is the difference between Tenant Screening vs Property Manager?

AspectTenant ScreeningProperty Manager
Primary RoleAssessing prospective tenants' background, credit, and rental historyOverseeing property operations, maintenance, and tenant relations
Required CredentialsBackground checks, rental application review, possibly leasing certificationsReal estate license, property management certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, often working with rental applications and background reportsOn-site and administrative work managing properties and tenants
Industry UsageUsed by landlords, property management companies, leasing agenciesUsed by property management firms, landlords, real estate companies

Tenant Screening focuses on evaluating prospective tenants to ensure reliable and responsible occupancy, while Property Managers handle the overall management of rental properties, including tenant relations, maintenance, and rent collection. Both roles are essential in the rental industry but serve different functions.

What is the best tenant screening company?

Tenant screening companies provide background checks, credit reports, and rental history verification to help landlords select reliable tenants. The best company depends on factors like cost, report accuracy, and speed, with popular options including TransUnion SmartMove, Experian, and RentPrep. Using these services can streamline the screening process and ensure compliance with Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) regulations.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

Nova Credit is the industry's leading cash flow intelligence platform, enabling businesses to unlock the power of cash flow data in how they operate. The company leverages its industry-leading data infrastructure, innovative intelligence layer, & robust FCRA-compliance to boost approvals, improve offers, fight fraud, drive responsible growth, and more. Nova Credit supports over 7,000 businesses including organizations such as Chase, HSBC, SoFi, Sallie Mae, Appfolio, and Yardi, with a growing suite of products. Nova Credit is proud to be backed by an exceptional group of investors and was named in Forbes' Fintech 50 in 2025 and Built In's Best Places to Work, 2025.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're seeking a Staff Product Manager with 8+ years of experience to own and scale Nova Credit's Property Management vertical. Over the past five-plus years, Nova Credit has processed millions of income verifications for thousands of property management companies - and this role owns the product strategy at the center of that business, spanning across all four of our products today: Income Navigator, Eligibility Compass, Credit Passport, and Cash Atlas.

This is an opportunity to own a vertical end-to-end: setting product strategy, building the roadmap, and shipping products that help housing providers verify applicants faster and more accurately while meeting challenging regulatory requirements. You'll partner deeply with property management and screening platforms (e.g., Yardi, Appfolio, SafeRent), and work closely with Engineering, Data Science, Compliance, and Go-To-Market. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, B2B2C environment, engages directly with market-rate property managers and affordable-housing operators, and translates their needs into impactful product requirements.
This is a hybrid full-time role (3 days per week in office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays) based in the New York Metropolitan area, reporting to the Head of Product. We welcome candidates willing to relocate- we provide relocation support to make your move smooth.
WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH, YOU'LL:

  • Get deep on the Property Management vertical, learning the fundamentals of the Property Management industry and their use cases for Nova Credit's product platform..
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships across Engineering, Data Science, Compliance, GTM, and Solutions Architecture.
  • Listen in on calls with market-rate property managers and affordable-housing operators, and review customer feedback to understand their pain points and needs.
  • Dive into product metrics and company KPIs to find areas for improvement.
  • Deliver on at least 1 key feature from the roadmap, while making a preliminary assessment on longer-term goals and priorities.

WITHIN THE FIRST QUARTER, YOU'LL:

  • Have a clear understanding of Nova Credit's business model, the property management landscape and customer needs across market-rate and affordable housing, as well as competitors.
  • Define and own the prioritized roadmap for the Property Management vertical that is aligned with company goals and our product vision.
  • Set quarterly product goals for the vertical.

WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, YOU'LL:

  • Become the subject matter expert for Nova Credit's Property Management vertical.
  • Launch and iterate on multiple initiatives across our product platform with demonstrated impact to key metrics like adoption and conversion.
  • Deepen integrations and partnerships with property management and screening platforms.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic cross-functional partners and key customers.
  • Refresh the product strategy for the vertical while contributing to annual roadmapping and Nova Credit's long-term product vision.

YOUR SKILLSET:

  • 8+ years in product management. B2B or B2B2C, with a proven track record of shipping high-performing products.
  • PropTech / property management background. Direct experience in property management, tenant screening, or affordable housing. (Strongly preferred.)
  • Comfort with regulated spaces. You treat compliance such as FCRA / CRA obligations and affordable-housing program requirements as a first-class product concern.
  • Data fluency. You write your own SQL queries and build Mixpanel dashboards to inform your decisions.
  • Customer obsession. You talk to customers constantly and synthesize their insights with quantitative data to drive strategy and prioritization.
  • Cross-functional range. You navigate technical trade-offs with Engineering, debate UX approaches with Design, tie prioritization to revenue for GTM, and communicate complex concepts to any audience.
  • Bias toward action. You break ambiguous problems into achievable milestones and drive them to resolution end-to-end, without being beholden to process over outcomes.

BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In-depth industry knowledge in PropTech, or working with consumer-permissioned or credit data within real estate technology.
  • Familiarity with affordable-housing programs and compliance (e.g., LIHTC, HUD, Section 8) or income/asset verification workflows.
