Job description

Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically-tailored meals, nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. Our team of seventy employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need. Food & Friends is proud to be a nationally-recognized leader of the Food is Medicine movement.


We have a temporary need for a part-time Community Dietitian to provide nutrition counseling and education to clients living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. The Dietitian will:


  • Provide nutrition counseling and ongoing follow-up to clients via phone or telehealth;
  • Document all client nutrition assessments and follow-ups in the client database;
  • Ensure that clients receive appropriate diet modifications;
  • Coordinate mailings, printing, documentation, and filing of client contact materials; and
  • Assist with quality control measures in the Kitchen and other programmatic departments.


We anticipate that this position will offer 20 hours of work per week for approximately four months. Must be willing to work onsite at Food & Friends’ Washington, DC headquarters.


The successful candidate must have DC or MD dietetic licensure. Must be self-motivated, collaborative, and possess strong time management skills. Additional requirements include knowledge of evidence-based nutrition, knowledge of medical nutrition therapy for a range of chronic illnesses, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Offer of employment contingent upon a background check and pre-employment drug test.


The temporary Community Dietitian position pays $40.00 per hour; benefits not included. Food & Friends is Metro accessible.
