Search & Comparison IntentOften compared due to overlapping skills in Windows kernel and driver development

Temporary Windows Kernel Developers and Temporary Device Driver Developers share core skills in C/C++ and Windows OS. While kernel developers focus on core system modules, device driver developers specialize in hardware communication. Both roles are essential in system-level software development and often overlap in certifications and work environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a temporary Windows kernel developer?

To thrive as a Temporary Windows Kernel Developer, you need strong expertise in C/C++ programming, in-depth knowledge of Windows internals, and experience with driver development, often supported by a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools such as WinDbg, Visual Studio, and Windows Driver Kit (WDK), along with understanding of kernel debugging and code analysis, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure efficient development and troubleshooting of low-level system components, critical for system stability and security.

What are common challenges faced by temporary Windows kernel developers, and how can they be addressed?

Temporary Windows Kernel Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly ramping up on complex codebases, understanding proprietary system architectures, and adapting to fast-paced project timelines. To address these challenges, it’s helpful to proactively communicate with team members, leverage available documentation, and participate in code reviews. Additionally, using debugging and virtualization tools familiar to Windows kernel development can streamline troubleshooting and integration tasks. Collaborating closely with QA and security teams is also crucial to ensure robust and secure kernel-level code.

What is a temporary Windows kernel developer?

Temporary Windows Kernel Developers are software engineers hired on a short-term basis to work on the core components of the Microsoft Windows operating system, known as the kernel. Their responsibilities include designing, coding, debugging, and maintaining kernel-mode modules, device drivers, or system utilities. These developers must have deep knowledge of Windows internals, C/C++ programming, and often work on performance optimization, security, or compatibility projects. Temporary positions are common when companies need specialized expertise for a specific project or during peak workloads.

Job description

About the Role

We are hiring a Senior C++ Software Engineer to join our growing Endpoint State and Control team, focused on defining and enforcing endpoint behavior across a managed environment. We build the foundational controls that let IT teams define, enforce, and maintain a strong security posture across every endpoint they manage. Trusted by over 40,000 customers globally, your work will directly power the tools IT teams and MSPs (managed service providers) rely on to monitor, manage, and secure endpoints at scale.

You will collaborate in a fast-paced, agile environment that emphasizes rapid iteration and customer-driven outcomes, working alongside other Software Engineers, Product Designers, and Product Managers. You are responsible for implementing design patterns and working on enterprise level software challenges, in a startup environment. Enabling firsthand product impact, while building software of scale that runs on millions and millions of endpoints.

If you are a Senior Software Engineer, with application-level C++ expertise, who thrives on solving complex technical challenges and is passionate about building high-quality, reliable software for real-world impact, this is the role for you!

What You’ll be Doing

  • C++ Software Development: design and implement scalable features, enhance platform performance, and support critical functionality across our core product suite. Use your expertise to contribute to the development of large-scale software applications.
  • Committing Code and Shipping Products: be one of our most trusted engineers committing code.
  • Other Duties as needed

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of C++ development experience, with proficiency in C++ 14 or newer
  • 5+ years of Windows systems-level C++ engineering
  • Strong familiarity with windows kernel drivers
  • Experience designing or maintaining a Windows kernel-mode driver or

service that runs on production endpoints

  • Comfortable designing from first principles, this is a net-new system

with no existing internal architecture to inherit

  • Drive technical design: write architecture documents, define

subsystem contracts, work cross-functionally with server and UI engineers

  • Comfortable working on problems with sparse documentation and

undefined requirements

  • Comfortable experimenting with AI tools in development workflow

PREFERRED:

  • WHQL driver certification experience (strongly preferred)
  • Driver development background (minifilter, WFP)
  • macOS systems experience: Apple Endpoint Security framework
  • Linux systems experience: eBPF or kernel module development
