Purpose
The Oncology Scribe/Medical Writer serves as a vital clinical partner to the attending medical oncologist, drastically reducing administrative burden to maximize direct patient interaction. Operating in a fast-paced outpatient cancer care environment, this position requires real-time, highly accurate clinical documentation within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). By learning the distinct workflow preferences of the physician, anticipating their clinical needs, and managing essential clerical tasks, the Medical Writer ensures patient visits flow smoothly, accurately, and compassionately.
Responsibilities
- Real-Time Clinical Documentation: Accompanies the medical oncologist into examination rooms to accurately summarize and document physician-patient consultations, including physical exam findings, additions to the chief complaint, assessments, and detailed oncological treatment plans.
- Oncology Pre-Charting (Remote): Utilizes one dedicated remote workday per week to review upcoming patient charts, organize relevant past medical history, and prep electronic templates from home.
- Care Flow Coordination: Remains in close proximity to the physician during clinic hours, helping to guide patients through their appointments, monitoring physical limitations, and assisting them out of exam rooms to expedite clinical flow.
- Administrative & Clerical Support: Performs essential front-and-back-office support tasks, including answering clinic phones, scanning medical documents, printing laboratory reports, and checking patients in or out.
- Scheduling & Work Queue Management: Coordinates closely with the front desk to ensure proper follow-up appointments are booked, addresses electronic work queues, and immediately flags emergencies or schedule adjustments for the physician.
- Patient Communication Awareness: Monitors patient verbal and non-verbal cues during physician instructions, ensuring that patient education materials or written directives are provided for home review when necessary.
- Billing & Charge Capture: Inputs specific procedural and visit charge information into the billing system exactly as designated by the attending provider.
- Exam Room & Inventory Oversight: Evaluates exam room conditions between patient visits to guarantee clinical areas are sterile and essential medical supplies remain fully stocked.
Minimum Essential Requirements
- Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED combined with four (4) years of experience in a medical office, medical transcription, or medical billing/coding setting.
- OR an Associate Degree (or equivalent college credits) combined with two (2) years of experience in a medical office, medical transcription, or medical billing/coding setting.
- Technical Skillset: Strong typing skills, comprehensive mastery of medical terminology, and a foundational knowledge of ICD-10 diagnostic coding.
- Interpersonal Agility: Exceptional active listening skills and the ability to adapt to the distinct technical preferences, pace, and personality of individual healthcare providers.
