The Trustees’ preserves, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. Our properties are open to all, and we thrive by involving as many people as possible in all that we do. We aim to protect special places for future generations to enjoy in perpetuity, and have helped protect more than 50,000 acres, including 27,000+ acres on more than 120 reservations that are open to the public. As a non-profit conservation organization, we are funded and supported entirely by our visitors, supporters, volunteers, and our 85,000 Member households. We encourage you to learn more about The Trustees on our website, www.thetrustees.org.

Hourly Rate: $24/hour

Hours per week: 25-35

Job Classification: Seasonal, Non-exempt

Duration: 4-6 weeks

Job Location Type: Hybrid

Location: MA -Statewide

What You’ll Do:

Membership is one of the most important ways people connect with The Trustees and support our mission to protect and share Massachusetts' special places. As a seasonal Membership Engagement Associate, you will play a key role in growing that connection by engaging visitors where they experience our mission firsthand, at membership tables at key reservations and events across the Commonwealth during our busiest season.

As a visible ambassador for The Trustees, you will help visitors discover the value of membership and inspire them to become part of a community that supports conservation, public access, and cultural experiences throughout Massachusetts. Through friendly, in-person conversation, you will contribute directly to membership growth and help ensure more people can connect with and support the places they love.

The Role:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Membership, the seasonal Membership Engagement Associate serves as a field-based representative of The Trustees’ membership program. This is a table- and event-based role focused on direct membership sales at key properties and events across the state.

Working independently at assigned sites, you will engage visitors in conversation about the value of membership, process on-site membership sales, and represent The Trustees with warmth and professionalism at properties and events throughout the season.

Specifically, you’ll be responsible for:

Membership Sales & Visitor Engagement

  • Staff membership tables and pop-up booths at assigned Trustees properties and events throughout Massachusetts.
  • Engage visitors in meaningful conversation about the impact and benefits of membership, tailoring messaging to individual interests.
  • Drive new membership sign-ups and upgrades at your assigned location(s), working toward seasonal and event-level sales goals.
  • Accurately process membership transactions and ensure data is collected and recorded appropriately.
  • Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable ambassador for The Trustees, delivering exceptional visitor experiences.

Property & Event Support

  • Set up, maintain, and break down an attractive, well-stocked membership table or booth, including signage and member materials.
  • Coordinate with property staff and event organizers on logistics, scheduling, and site-specific needs.
  • Travel between properties and events as needed based on the seasonal staffing calendar.

This is a seasonal, temporary, non-exempt position (July through September) reporting directly to the Senior Director of Membership.

Requirements

What You’ll Need:

Skills and Experience:

  • Sales or customer-facing experience preferred (retail, hospitality, fundraising, canvassing, or similar); not required for the right candidate.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage comfortably with diverse audiences.
  • Confidence and enthusiasm for initiating conversations and promoting membership through in-person interactions.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing needs across different properties and events.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Basic comfort with point-of-sale and working on a tablet, training provided.
  • Reliable transportation and the flexibility to travel regularly to assigned properties and events throughout Massachusetts.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays to support the event and visitation calendar.
  • Ability to work outdoors and remain standing or active for extended periods, and to lift/carry table and display materials (up to 25 lbs).
  • Enthusiasm for The Trustees’ mission and a genuine interest in conservation, outdoor recreation, and connecting people to special places.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current authorization to work in the United States – a candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.

Don’t quite have all the skills and experience listed above? We still want to hear from you! Research shows that historically marginalized groups are less likely to apply if they do not meet every single requirement. We are committed to building a diverse team and encourage you to apply even if you are missing some of the skills and experience above.

Benefits

Your Benefits:

  • Reciprocity: Enjoy access to free and discounted admission and membership to more than 50 nearby museums and cultural institutions for Trustees Staff, Volunteers and Interns.
  • Discounts: Enjoy free entry to all Trustees properties, discount event tickets, and discounted merchandise at our stores and on stays at our inns.
