Job Description Summary
Eastern Oregon University (EOU) accepts applications for temporary General Laborers to join our Facilities team
This posting is to apply to an applicant "pool" from which EOU will hire applicants as needed to fill temporary needs in staffing throughout the Summer to help clean and maintain our residence halls.
Custodians and Trades Maintenance support the goals of the EOU Facilities Department by maintaining the cleanliness, general appearance, and general maintenance of the residence halls. Responsibilities may also include setting up spaces for campus events and assisting with moves between offices and buildings.
As the occasional first point of contact for students, staff, and the general public, the incumbent will be called to answer general questions in a courteous personal and professional manner.
The length of position assignments will vary but are unlikely to extend beyond 6 months.
Responsibilities
  • Assist Custodial staff with perform various types of custodial duties: sweep, dust, mop, scrub, strip, wax and polish floors; dust furnishings and horizontal surfaces throughout the buildings; wash interior windows, wash walls; clean upholstered furniture; vacuum, spot clean, and shampoo carpets; remove cobwebs; clean lamps, tables, desks, beds, furnishings, light fixtures and appliances; empty trash and remove from building to waste collection areas; clean and disinfect, kitchen appliances, Clean and disinfect all restrooms: fixtures, dividers, doors, floors and walls; clean and shine mirrors, dump trash.
  • Assist Trades and Grounds maintenance staff with performing general preventative maintenance, general painting, minor removal and renovations, weeding, and may include operating landscaping and trades tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Physical demands:
  • Physical ability to stand and walk on a consistent basis and be able to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds; be able to climb ladders and use various lifts; be able to repeatedly bend, squat, and reach, twist hands, wrists, shoulders, waist and hips; and must have good hand dexterity including grasping, holding and repetitive movements.

Safety:
  • Ability to understand and obey all safe work practices and safety rules involving hazardous cleaning materials, proper lifting, walking surfaces, machine operating safety, emergency response and building regulations.

Communication Skills:
  • Basic computer skills, good communication skills, both oral and written, reading skills, and positive interpersonal skills necessary for working with others in an effective team fashion.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and receive supervision on a regular and frequent basis. Work is reviewed on a regular and continuing basis by the Custodial Supervisor to determine whether duties are being performed in a manner that meets the standards of the Department. A yearly performance evaluation is performed to document progress or deficiencies of this position.

  • Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Eastern Oregon University does not sponsor applicants for employment visas.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Substantial prior custodial related professional experience giving attention to detail and conscientious orientation to completing all work in high-quality and efficient manners.
