Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Faculty Researcher, the individual will support an architectural biomaterials research project focused on the development, fabrication, and testing of mycelium-based insulating board mock-ups for potential building industry applications. The position will assist with material cultivation, mock-up fabrication, experimental testing, documentation, data collection, and benchmarking against conventional architectural materials.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with the cultivation and preparation of mycelium-based biomaterials for insulating board mock-ups.
  • Support the fabrication of material samples, board assemblies, and testing mock-ups. 
  • Assist in the design and construction of a mock-up testing box to evaluate insulating properties. 
  • Conduct basic thermal performance testing and collect environmental data related to material behavior. 
  • Document material growth, fabrication processes, testing procedures, and experimental results through photographs, notes, drawings, and digital files.
  • Support benchmarking studies comparing mycelium boards, other biomaterials, and conventional architectural insulation/materials. 
  • Assist with digital modeling, drawings, diagrams, and graphic representation of the research process and findings. 
  • Participate in regular in-person and virtual research meetings with the Faculty Researcher and project team. 
  • Contribute to literature reviews, precedent studies, and research summaries related to biomaterials, mycelium composites, and sustainable building materials.
  • Maintain an organized and safe work environment during material preparation, fabrication, and testing activities. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Information

This is a Part-Time per diem position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
