What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary VDC Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Temporary VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) Engineer, you need a solid background in construction engineering, architectural design, and proficiency with BIM methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with technical tools like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD, and certifications in BIM or VDC processes, are typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you coordinate with diverse project teams and manage digital workflows efficiently. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate project visualization, reducing errors, and facilitating collaboration in fast-paced construction environments.

What are some common challenges Temporary VDC Engineers face when joining a new project team?

Temporary VDC Engineers often need to quickly adapt to new workflows, software platforms, and team dynamics since they may join projects mid-way through their lifecycle. Familiarizing themselves with existing models and documentation while building rapport with architects, engineers, and contractors can be challenging under tight deadlines. Proactively communicating, asking clarifying questions, and leveraging available onboarding resources can help ensure a smooth transition and effective collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

What are Temporary VDC Engineers?

Temporary VDC Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term or project basis to support Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) initiatives in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries. They use digital modeling tools like BIM (Building Information Modeling) to coordinate and optimize construction projects. Their responsibilities may include creating 3D models, detecting design clashes, and collaborating with project teams to ensure accurate and efficient construction planning. Temporary roles are often needed to meet project deadlines, manage peak workloads, or provide specialized VDC expertise for specific phases of a project.

What is the difference between Temporary Vdc Engineer vs Temporary Vdc Technician?

AspectTemporary Vdc EngineerTemporary Vdc Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, VDC certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree, VDC training
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and project management in VDC projectsOn-site installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of VDC systems
Employer & IndustryConstruction, engineering firms, infrastructure projectsConstruction companies, subcontractors, VDC service providers

Temporary Vdc Engineers focus on design, planning, and project coordination within VDC projects, requiring engineering credentials. In contrast, Temporary Vdc Technicians handle on-site installation and maintenance, often with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in the VDC industry but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

Job description

About Your Opportunity :
The VDC Engineer advances project delivery by applying Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to improve coordination, constructability, and communication from preconstruction through closeout. This role develops and manages digital models, leads trade coordination and clash detection, and produces model-based visuals and deliverables that help teams plan and build with confidence.
You will support project teams in planning and field execution using platforms such as Revit, Navisworks / coordination tools, and cloud collaboration environments (e.g., Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud). The VDC Engineer also supports reality capture (laser scanning/photogrammetry) and UAV/drone activities for progress documentation and existing-conditions verification, in coordination with the VDC Manager and project leadership.
Responsibilities:
• Develop, manage, and coordinate project BIM/VDC models to support preconstruction, construction, and closeout activities.
• Facilitate model-based trade coordination and clash detection; document issues, drive resolution, and communicate changes to designers, trade partners, and internal stakeholders.
• Perform model QA/QC (standards compliance, LOD readiness, naming/parameters, version control) and help maintain model integrity throughout the project lifecycle.
• Produce hands-on model-based deliverables including coordination views, installation details, logistics plans, temporary works visuals, and phasing/sequence studies (4D) as required.
• Support estimating and preconstruction with quantity takeoffs, model-driven area/volume checks, and constructability reviews.
• Create renderings, animations, and presentation materials to support pursuits, owner meetings, and internal planning.
• Support field execution by providing model-based information for installation sequencing and coordination; assist with layout/model access needs and respond to field questions in a timely manner.
• Assist with reality capture and UAV/drone activities (planning, data collection, processing, and archiving) to document progress and validate existing conditions/as-builts where applicable.
• Help maintain project workspaces in VDC platforms (project setup support, access/permissions as directed, file organization, and model sharing workflows).
• Contribute to continuous improvement by sharing lessons learned, assisting with templates/standards adoption, and helping train team members on project-specific VDC workflows.
Relationships:
• Reports to: VDC Manager
• Partners with: Business Development, Preconstruction, Project Management, Superintendents, and Field Operations
• Coordinates with: Clients, Designers, Trade Partners, and the Ops Technology Trainer/VDC Team
Authority:
• Coordinate and facilitate project coordination meetings (internal and with trade partners) and escalate unresolved issues to project leadership as needed.
• Recommend project-level VDC workflows, deliverables, and model requirements consistent with company standards and client/project needs.
• Support access and configuration requests within approved VDC platforms for assigned projects (in coordination with the VDC Manager).
• Support reality capture/UAV activities on assigned projects in accordance with approved procedures and applicable regulations.
Expected Results:
• Timely, accurate coordination models and clash reports that help teams resolve conflicts early and reduce field rework.
• Clear, usable model-based visuals and deliverables (logistics/phasing, install details, renderings/animations) that support planning and stakeholder communication.
• Reliable project documentation through reality capture/UAV support and organized data workflows that enable progress tracking and existing-conditions/as-built verification.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• 5+ years of experience in BIM/VDC, construction technology, or digital delivery supporting commercial construction projects.
• Proficiency with BIM authoring and coordination tools (e.g., Revit, Navisworks or equivalent) and 2D/3D production workflows.
• Experience with cloud collaboration platforms and model/data management (e.g., Procore / Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar).
• Working knowledge of clash detection, constructability reviews, and model QA/QC processes; ability to communicate solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience producing visuals for presentations (renderings/animations) and strong proficiency with common content creation tools; Adobe Creative Suite experience is a plus.
• Familiarity with reality capture workflows (laser scanning/photogrammetry), point clouds, and as-built validation preferred.
• FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certification (or ability to obtain) preferred; strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills required.
Physical Requirements :
In a normal day, the team member must be able to sit and walk for 7+ hours and stand for 4-6 hours. The team member must be able to drive 1-4 hours as needed for project, training, or business support. The team member must be able to lift/carry up to 10 lbs. In this position, the team member occasionally (0-33%) must be able to bend at the waist, squat at the knees, climb (including ladders), reach above shoulders, kneel, crawl, use feet (foot controls), and/or work at heights above 6 fee
