Job Description
Title:Telecommunications Technician
Duration: 12 Months Contract (Possible Extensions)
Location: Westfield, PA
Job Description
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installation and maintenance of alltelecommunications circuits including phone, carrier, microwave and otherwireless communications systems, two-way radio, analog, digital and fiberoptic systems.
  • Read and interpret communications circuit diagramsand equipment documentation.
  • Use advanced diagnostic test equipment to isolateand repair problems.
  • Work closely with information technology telecomengineers to plan the installation of communication facilities, equipmentfor new facilities or sites as required.
  • (20%) Installation and maintenance of local areanetwork and wide area network equipment to ensure connectivity to desktopand remote locations. Basic computer diagnostic skills to support mobilecomputer and wireless network services.
  • (15-20%) Support of all related systems associatedwith telecommunications including data devices, network equipment,telemeter devices and common equipment such as central radio dispatchequipment, radio consoles and other specialty phone devices.
  • Provide advanced support for the remote terminalunits in substations and provide this support for emergency managementsystem testing. Assist in the alignment, maintenance and testing of powerline carrier systems.
  • (15%) Provide project consulting to telecomengineers.
  • (10-15%) Provide technical input to assist indevelopment of project planning. Assist IT telecom engineers incoordinating project plans and schedules.
  • (5-15%) Coordinate activities of communicationscarrier companies during installation of circuits for company use.Coordinate efforts of contractors when they are providing services orinstalling equipment for the company.
  • (5-10%) Correct phone line problems on companyextensions and tie lines. Move company phones and workstations. Performany additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
  • (0-5%)Performance Expectations (Key Success Factors): Create departmentdocumentation on communications circuits and equipment.
  • Install equipment and systems to meet other businessunits' deadlines and expectations. Perform responsibilities as directedwithin determined time frames and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Provide accurate input into the budget process andcontribute to meeting the actual targets. Establish and maintain effectivework relationships within the department and the company.
  • Maintain the professional competence, knowledge andskills necessary for the satisfactory completion of responsibilities;enhance job knowledge and abilities by taking personal responsibility forprofessional development and training.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential informationregarding company information.
  • Attend work on a regular basis and support thecompany's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safetyrules. Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed;understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulationsapplicable to position and company.

Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver'slicense.
  • Two-year degree intelecommunications or data networking or equivalent work experience.
  • (Typically two years ofadditional related, progressive work experience would be needed forcandidates applying for this position who do not possess a two yeardegree.
  • A minimum of one year additionaldirectly related technical experience is required.)
  • Three years of experience intelecommunications or related voice and data communication field withadvanced skills in multiple telecommunication or utility disciplines orhas demonstrated advanced telecommunications skills, job knowledge andleadership skills during employment with the company.
  • Must possess advanced AC/DCknowledge and understand the safety aspects of working in high voltageenvironments. Ability to test voice and data circuits using meters,oscilloscopes and other communication test equipment. Intermediate toadvanced knowledge of information technology terms, equipment, systems,functions and major vendors.
  • Effective oral and writtencommunication skills.
  • Able to effectively assist withthe installation and troubleshooting efforts with vendors and serviceproviders.
  • Effective advanced analytical andproblem-solving skills.
  • Advanced ability to prioritizeand handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently with limited dailysupervision.
