The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and safety of operations. Key responsibilities will include performing general labor duties such as washing down and conducting routine maintenance on the coke conveyor system and surrounding work areas. You will monitor fluid levels and change rollers as needed throughout the conveyor system. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by cross-training on the coke loading dock. As a barge handler, you will be tasked with drafting barges using a gauging tape, ensuring accurate measurements are communicated to the PLC operator. Your ability to secure the barge properly while maintaining clear communication with the PLC operator will be essential to our operations. Your contributions will help enhance the overall efficiency and safety of our facilities .

Location: St. Charles, LA

Days/Hours: Rotating Shifts/12 hours/4:30 AM-4:30 PM

Equipment Used: Skid Steer, F irehose/Pressure Washer

Material Handled: Petroleum Coke

Here is what you will be doing

  • Maintains cleanliness and function of the conveyor system to transport dry bulk products
  • Shovels coke from areas around sump pumps and under the conveyor
  • Wash down equipment with a 2" firehose or a pressure washer
  • Operates skid steer
  • Completes and maintains accurate records related to all maintenance activities in the conveyor system
  • Load Petroleum Coke barges at the loading dock on the Mississippi River
  • Secure and guide the barge using ropes
  • Draft barges with gauging tape

Requirements of a successful Utility Laborer

  • Must meet refinery standards for entering the plant, i.e., clean criminal history, ability to pass a hair-follicle drug screen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Pass the Valero St. Charles site-specific training on an annual basis
  • Work from written and verbal instructions
  • Work with a team, take direction from supervisor(s), adhere to required work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules
  • Work safely and perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to their own safety or the safety of others
  • Work overtime as required
  • Work any shift if needed
  • Can follow all rules and procedures as outlined by Savage and Valero
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English
  • Valid Driver's License
  • High School or GED
  • MUST Have a TWIC Card

Here are some of the physical requirements for this role

  • Ability to work outside in ALL weather conditions (snow, rain, cold temps)
  • Physically able to climb up and down rail cars/ladders safely and work at heights
  • In good physical condition to perform the essential physical functions of the position
  • Work in an environment containing coke dust and in hot, cold, or wet environments
  • Wear PPE, which could include a respiratory
  • Lift approximately 0-25 lbs. unassisted and regularly, 0-50 lbs. occasionally
  • Climbs stairs and works at various heights
