Job description

Job Title: Accessioner / Lab Assistant

Job Description

The Accessioner I processes and organizes laboratory specimens to support accurate clinical testing and patient care. This role focuses primarily on blood samples, but may also handle urine and tissue specimens. The Accessioner I carefully receives, labels, and catalogs specimens, enters clinical information into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), and collaborates with laboratory staff to ensure that samples are ready for diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and triage all incoming specimens for clinical testing, ensuring they are properly labeled and matched with the correct documentation.
  • Process and organize patient specimens, primarily blood but also urine and tissue, according to established laboratory protocols.
  • Manage and accurately enter clinical information into the LIMS database, maintaining complete and up-to-date records.
  • Perform internal audits of clinical charts and documentation to verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaborate with various laboratory departments to ensure testing accuracy and timely processing of samples.
  • Follow all laboratory procedures and quality standards to maintain specimen integrity and data accuracy.
  • Perform data entry tasks with high attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team to support overall laboratory workflow.
  • Participate in required training and maintain familiarity with current laboratory policies and procedures.

Essential Skills

  • 0–2 years of experience in a laboratory, accessioning, phlebotomy, or related environment.
  • Experience handling and preparing laboratory samples, preferably blood specimens.
  • Proficiency with data entry and managing information in electronic systems.
  • Proven attention to accuracy, detail, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills for triaging and cataloging multiple specimens.
  • Willingness and ability to work a Monday–Friday third shift schedule (8:00 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.) with availability for mandatory weekend work as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • AS or BS degree in biological sciences preferred.
  • Previous experience as a lab assistant or phlebotomist with sample preparation experience is highly beneficial.
  • Experience or coursework in the sciences, suitable for science students seeking overnight work related to their field.
  • Familiarity with laboratory workflows and diagnostic testing processes.
  • Comfort working with blood, urine, and tissue specimens in a clinical laboratory setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a diagnostic laboratory environment that operates on a third shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., with mandatory weekend work as required. You will work primarily at a computer and laboratory bench, handling and processing blood, urine, and tissue specimens. The position involves frequent use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for data entry and tracking, as well as standard laboratory equipment for specimen handling and preparation. The environment is structured, process-driven, and quality-focused, with clear procedures and protocols that support accurate clinical testing. Team members collaborate closely but also work independently on assigned tasks.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $17.50/hr.
