Job Title: Senior Principal Aerospace Engineer (Structural Repair)
Role Overview
We are seeking a high-level Senior Principal Engineer to serve as the technical authority for the design, analysis, and certification of structural repairs and modifications on commercial aircraft. In this role, you will lead the engineering liaison efforts during heavy maintenance cycles, ensuring that all repairs meet rigorous airworthiness standards and FAA regulations. You will be responsible for performing static strength analysis, developing substantiation reports, and making critical "go/no-go" decisions in time-sensitive operational environments. The ideal candidate is an expert in reverse engineering and structural substantiation who can deliver innovative, compliant solutions under tight maintenance timelines.
Key Responsibilities
• Repair Design & Validation: Lead the development of complex structural repairs and modifications for commercial fleets. Create detailed work instructions and engineering documentation for maintenance execution.
• Structural Analysis: Perform static strength analysis and develop comprehensive substantiation reports to ensure the airworthiness of modified or repaired structures.
• Maintenance Liaison Support: Provide expert onsite or remote liaison support during heavy maintenance (C/D Checks) and aircraft modification programs.
• Damage Assessment: Evaluate structural damage and develop practical, compliant repair solutions, often reverse engineering existing structures when data is incomplete.
• Regulatory Oversight: Interpret and apply FAA regulations (FARs, ADs) and internal airworthiness policies to all engineering outputs.
• Decision Authority: Act as the final technical arbiter for repair design and airworthiness determinations, making risk-mitigated decisions based on evolving data.
• Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate with maintenance, quality, and operations teams to ensure seamless implementation of engineering solutions.
• Process Improvement: Drive the evolution of engineering tools, documentation standards, and continuous improvement initiatives within the structural department.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering.
• Professional Experience:
• 5-10 years of structural repair design experience specifically in the aviation industry.
• 3+ years of direct engineering liaison support during heavy maintenance or major modification events.
• Proven background in Static Strength Analysis and work instruction development.
• Technical Mastery:
• Deep knowledge of commercial aircraft platforms (Boeing and Airbus).
• Expert-level understanding of sheet metal and composite repair techniques.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office; experience in reverse engineering aircraft structures.
• Regulatory Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to apply FAA regulations, Airworthiness Directives (ADs), and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
• Attributes: Strong decision-making skills under pressure; willingness to work flexible schedules (including nights/weekends) to support 24/7 flight operations.
