Turnaround Specialist II
Location: Mont Belvieu, TX 77580
Pay Rate: $55–$65/hr
Employment Type: Temporary / Contract
Schedule: Must be available for extended hours, weekends, holidays, overtime, and call-outs throughout the turnaround assignment.
Position Summary
The Turnaround Specialist II is responsible for supporting all phases of turnaround planning and execution activities within an assigned project area. Reporting directly to the Lead Turnaround Specialist, this role serves as both a planner and field coordinator, ensuring turnaround work is executed safely, efficiently, and according to schedule. This position works closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, inspection, scheduling, and contractor teams to drive successful turnaround execution from planning through completion.
Key Responsibilities
Planning Phase
- Conduct field walkdowns to verify project scope and work requirements
- Photograph equipment and work locations as needed
- Develop detailed job plans and work packages within the planning system
- Verify labor requirements, inspection needs, materials, durations, and equipment specifications
- Validate valve and piping specifications
- Compare field conditions against engineering drawings and identify discrepancies
- Update plans, drawings, and technical documentation
- Enter and maintain job information within IPS
- Assist schedulers with job sequencing and schedule logic development
- Verify Bills of Material (BoMs) contain all required materials for execution
- Coordinate with scheduling, materials management, and document control teams
Execution Phase
- Support contractor onboarding and mobilization activities
- Serve as Area Coordinator during turnaround execution
- Monitor contractor productivity, progress, quality, and safety performance
- Coordinate daily work activities with contractor supervision
- Identify and remove barriers that impact schedule performance
- Work closely with schedulers to track progress and maintain schedule adherence
- Verify contractor staffing levels support planned work execution
- Coordinate with inspection personnel regarding additional or discovery work
- Complete AWRs, delay reports, and required turnaround documentation
- Participate in rollover meetings and provide status updates on assigned work scopes
Ongoing Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe and compliant work environment
- Support continuous improvement initiatives for turnaround planning and execution
- Assist turnaround leadership with special projects and assignments
- Support maintenance and capital project activities as needed
- Ensure accurate reporting and project status updates throughout the turnaround lifecycle
Required Qualifications
- Experience supporting industrial turnarounds, shutdowns, outages, or maintenance projects
- Experience in refinery, petrochemical, midstream, terminal, or heavy industrial environments
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, work permits, safety procedures, and technical manuals
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of industrial equipment and systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and planning/scheduling software
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to work effectively with contractors, operations, maintenance, engineering, and inspection teams
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and call-outs as required
- Ability to travel domestically
- Must reside within or relocate to within one hour of the reporting location
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous turnaround planning or turnaround coordination experience
- Experience using IPS or similar turnaround planning software
- Experience in refining, petrochemical, terminal, pipeline, natural gas, or heavy industrial operations
Physical Requirements
- Work indoors and outdoors in industrial environments
- Work in varying weather conditions and temperature extremes
- Lift up to 50 pounds and manually transport loads up to 75 pounds
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and work at elevated heights
- Work in confined spaces and wear required PPE
- Ability to visually inspect work areas and respond to alarms and safety signals
- Travel across industrial sites and uneven terrain as needed
