What are Temporary Radio Frequency Engineers?

Temporary Radio Frequency Engineers are specialists hired on a short-term basis to design, test, and optimize wireless communication systems. They typically work on projects involving radio transmitters, receivers, antennas, and networks for industries like telecommunications, broadcasting, and defense. Their expertise is crucial for tasks such as network deployment, troubleshooting interference issues, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Temporary positions may arise due to project-based needs, seasonal workloads, or to cover permanent staff absences.

What are some common challenges faced by Temporary Radio Frequency Engineers, and how can they effectively address them?

Temporary Radio Frequency Engineers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new project environments, managing tight deployment schedules, and integrating with existing technical teams. Since these roles are typically project-based, engineers must rapidly assess site-specific RF conditions, troubleshoot interference issues, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving help engineers overcome these hurdles and deliver results within limited timeframes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Radio Frequency Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Radio Frequency Engineer, you need a strong background in RF engineering principles, signal propagation, and telecommunications, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, RF simulation software, and sometimes industry certifications like FCC or IEEE is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in dynamic project environments. These skills ensure accurate system design, efficient troubleshooting, and reliable wireless network performance within tight project timelines.

What is the highest salary for an RF engineer?

The highest salaries for a temporary radio frequency engineer can reach over $150,000 annually, especially for those with extensive experience, specialized skills, or working in high-demand industries like telecommunications or defense. Senior RF engineers with advanced certifications and expertise in signal analysis and testing typically earn the top compensation levels.

Job description

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
Could you be the full-time Senior Network Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA we're looking for?
Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your technical and leadership expertise in a cutting-edge field. You'll work alongside collaborative and innovative teammates.
You'll play a key role in delivering quality, cost, and delivery (QCD) commitments for the Network & Telecom (N&T) sub-system design. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (installation teams, cybersecurity teams, power experts), define system specifications, and ensure seamless integration of N&T sub-systems. You'll also contribute to functional validation and provide technical support to installation and commissioning teams.
You'll specifically take care of designing N&T sub-systems in compliance with engineering rules and best practices, but also support project engineering management and risk assessment processes.
We'll look to you for:
  • Reaching Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) commitments for N&T sub-system design and managing trade-offs between work packages to optimize performance
  • Elaborating N&T sub-system design specifications and ensuring alignment with best practices
  • Developing N&T sub-system Bill of Quantity (BoQ) and supporting installation managers
  • Maintaining close follow-up on technical gaps and ensuring consistency of external interfaces
  • Supervising system deliveries, including requirements, documentation, and performance
  • Supporting functional validation and managing sub-system configuration throughout the project lifecycle
  • Providing technical support for installation and commissioning activities
  • Ensuring all N&T designs adhere to quality processes and guidelines
  • Collaborating with other sub-system design leaders and project architects to ensure overall project performance

All about you
We value passion and attitude over experience. That's why we don't expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we've listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Electrical, Telecommunications, Informational Science or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in radio deployments in an industrial or related environment
  • Experience in managing design telecommunications/networking projects (preferred)
  • Wireless/radio design experience (preferred)
  • Team-oriented and solutions-focused mindset
  • Strong understanding of system integration and configuration management
  • Ability to collaborate across diverse teams and adapt to evolving project needs

Things you'll enjoy Join us on a life-long transformative journey - the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You'll also:
  • Enjoy stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
  • Work with new security standards for rail signalling
  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues
  • Contribute to innovative projects
  • Utilise our flexible and inclusive working environment
  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries
  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning
  • Progress towards leadership or technical expertise roles
  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!
