Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.
Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.
Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.

Job Description

We are currently accepting applications for the following positions.

EAF - LFVD HELPER

JOB DUTIES

  • Performs all tasks safely and in strict accordance with current work instructions while wearing all mandated PPE.
  • Assists the First and Second Helpers, as necessary, with miscellaneous tasks at electric furnaces.
  • Assists LFVD Operators, as necessary, with miscellaneous tasks at the LFVD.
  • Shall be required to learn the duties of Second Helper and advance, if qualified, when a permanent opening occurs.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Stocking necessary supplies at the furnaces and LFVD, such as fluxes, alloys, electrodes.
  • Adding fluxes, alloys, and other materials to furnace or ladle.
  • Opening and sealing tap hole.
  • Assisting with refractory repairs, including gunning and hearth, tap hole, and runner repair.
  • Assisting with electrode adding.
  • Performs testing as necessary or directed, including but not limited to, temperature, carbon, and oxygen. Takes samples for lab chemical analysis and sends to lab.
  • Operates lift truck and other mobile equipment as required.
  • Keeps work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition, free of obstacles, or any other hazardous condition.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

UTILITY

JOB DUTIES

  • Performs laboring and janitorial tasks and relieves or replaces Pitman – Bottom Pour “A” and EAF - LFVD Helper, as necessary. Possesses working knowledge necessary to perform the daily tasks required in these classifications.
  • Operates lift trucks and other mobile equipment, as needed.
  • May be required to operate overhead crane or perform other jobs for which already qualified, if a temporary vacancy or need exists.
  • Maintains accurate records of all activities within the scope of job requirements. Data to be entered into computer systems, spreadsheets, and / or recorded onto paper forms, as directed.
  • Keeps work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition, free of obstacles, or any other hazardous condition.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Must be available to work all three shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Must demonstrate self-motivation and problem-solving in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
