Temporary Motion Capture Actor information

What is a temporary motion capture actor?

Temporary motion capture actors are performers hired on a short-term or project-specific basis to wear special suits and equipment that capture their movements for digital animation. Their physical actions are recorded and used to create realistic character animations in video games, movies, or virtual reality experiences. These actors may be brought in for specific scenes or characters, often working closely with directors and animators to achieve the desired performance. Temporary roles usually last for the duration of a particular project or until specific motion data is captured.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary motion capture actor?

To thrive as a Temporary Motion Capture Actor, you need strong physical fitness, body awareness, and the ability to reproduce precise movements, often supported by acting or dance training. Familiarity with motion capture suits, marker placement, and performance capture software is typically required, and experience with related technology or equipment is a plus. Exceptional creativity, adaptability, and the ability to take direction well are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate, expressive performances that translate well to digital characters and meet the creative needs of production teams.

What can I expect from the typical work schedule and environment as a temporary motion capture actor?

As a Temporary Motion Capture Actor, your work schedule is often project-based and can vary from short, intensive sessions to multi-day shoots, depending on production needs. You'll typically work in a studio environment equipped with motion capture technology, wearing specialized suits fitted with sensors. Collaboration is key, as you'll interact closely with directors, animators, and sometimes other actors to bring characters to life. Flexibility and adaptability are important, as scenes may require multiple takes and adjustments based on direction. • Scouting locations and conduct environment scanning.
  • Process captured images into 3D assets using photogrammetry workflows.
  • Capture high-quality 2D scans of materials and textures.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot scanning studio equipment and hardware.
  • Contribute to the development of internal tools and pipelines by researching and evaluating new technologies and workflows.
  • Lend support to the Boston Motion Capture team with on-stage activities as needed.

  • Deep attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality scan data.
  • Flexibility and an open-minded approach to problem-solving.
  • Openness to feedback, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing with teammates.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Basic scripting skills (e.g., Python, JavaScript).
  • Practical experience using hand and power tools to build, modify, or maintain equipment and scanning setups.
  • Experience working with actors, performers, or models in a studio or production environment.
  • Experience with photogrammetry rigs is a plus.
