Teleoperation information

What is a teleoperation?

A teleoperation job involves remotely controlling machines, robots, or vehicles in real-time using specialized software and hardware. Operators typically work with autonomous or semi-autonomous systems to ensure they perform tasks accurately and safely. These roles are common in industries like autonomous vehicles, robotics, and industrial automation. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to react quickly to changing situations are essential for success in this field.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in teleoperation?

A teleoperation professional is primarily responsible for remotely operating vehicles, machinery, or robotic equipment, often monitoring system dashboards and responding to live feedback in real time. Daily tasks may include troubleshooting technical issues, coordinating with on-site teams, following strict safety protocols, and maintaining detailed operational logs. Many positions involve shift work to provide around-the-clock support, especially in sectors such as logistics, mining, or transportation. Collaboration with engineers, maintenance crews, and supervisors is also common to ensure optimal performance and rapid issue resolution. This dynamic environment requires keen attention to detail and the ability to respond calmly to unexpected challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in teleoperation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Teleoperation, you need excellent spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and proficiency in operating remote-control systems, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications. Familiarity with teleoperation platforms, robotics interfaces, and communication software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help operators adapt to dynamic situations and collaborate with remote teams. These abilities are essential to ensure safe, precise, and reliable remote operation across various industries such as robotics, transportation, and logistics.

Job description

We are looking for a Teleoperation Engineer to sit at the intersection of our operations and engineering teams. In this role, you will train and manage the quality of a team of teleoperation operators, establish and maintain data collection standards, and act as the critical bridge between project management and the technical teams developing our teleoperation and policy systems. You will maintain direct teleoperation proficiency and translate operational insight into actionable engineering feedback, and vice versa. This role starts hands on and grows in scope and ownership as we scale.
Your Responsibilities
Teleoperation
  • Spend significant hands-on time operating our robotic systems directly. Active teleoperation is a core, ongoing part of this role, not an occasional task
  • Maintain direct proficiency across robotic systems and teleoperation interfaces (VR, joystick, or control rigs)
  • Set the standard for task execution and demonstration quality through your own operation

Training and Quality Management
  • Onboard and train new teleoperation operators, establishing consistent standards for task execution, data quality, and reporting
  • Monitor and evaluate operator performance and demonstration data quality across active projects
  • Establish and improve QA processes, and maintain oversight of data custody, tracking, reporting, and issue investigation
  • Develop and maintain SOPs, training materials, and quality frameworks for teleoperation workflows
  • Build and maintain the operational systems, trackers, reporting cadences, and documentation the function runs on
  • Maintain accurate logs of training outcomes, data quality metrics, and cross team feedback

Cross Team Coordination
  • Act as the primary bridge between the operations team and the engineering team (teleoperation and policy development), surfacing operator feedback, flagging systematic issues, and translating engineering guidance into practical operator instructions
  • Identify patterns in operator errors, edge cases, and system inconsistencies, and escalate them with structured, actionable context
  • Support engineering teams in improving data collection pipelines and interfaces based on operational insight

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience in training, QA, or a technical environment
  • Completed or in progress technical degree highly preferred (Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, etc)
  • Exposure to teleoperation or VR based gaming and control systems is a big plus
  • Background in a structured, process oriented, or fast paced operational setting

Skills
  • Strong communication and documentation skills with the ability to convey technical concepts across technical and non technical audiences
  • Proven ability to assess quality rigorously and coach others toward consistency
  • Comfortable working with digital tools, interfaces, and data driven workflows
  • Basic technical understanding sufficient to engage productively with engineering teams

Nice to Have
  • Direct experience with teleoperation systems, simulation environments, or robotics platforms
  • Familiarity with imitation learning or how demonstration data is used in robot policy training
  • Experience in competitive gaming, esports, or precision controller based tasks; strong spatial awareness and input consistency are directly applicable
  • Background in data annotation, quality assurance, or structured data collection pipelines
  • Experience with VR systems or immersive digital environments
  • Experience in a startup environment

What We Offer
  • Wellpass (gym membership)
  • Flexible working hours
  • Option to work from home when needed
  • A motivated team and an open corporate culture
  • Competitive compensation and excellent career development opportunities

Compensation & Benefits
Base salary range: USD $60,000-90,000 (actual pay based on skills, experience, and
location)
