Job description

The University of Virginia is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Camera Control Operator. Camera Control Operators provide surveillance support and information for police, security and other emergency responders for criminal and/or other emergency incidents. They independently observe feeds (both permanent and temporary) from approximately 3,900 cameras to identify criminal incidents, suspicious activities, in an effort to support emergency responses or contact emergency personnel for an observed incident. Camera Control Operators direct cameras to locations associated with police or emergency responses as identified from radio transmissions and will provide information that will contribute to officer safety, identify criminals, and reduce property losses. These are unarmed, non-sworn civilian positions.
The successful candidate will be able to follow specific oral and written instructions and safety procedures, as well as the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. They will also be able to demonstrate technical savvy and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. The successful candidate will also be required to complete the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator training either before or during employment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: 6 months experience in a security position or in a position dealing with the public required.
  • Licensure: Active and Valid Virginia Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior work or volunteer experience in safety, security, or law enforcement
  • Some college education
  • An active VCIN certification

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Starting salary is $52,000 annually ($25 per hour base pay).
  • Additional $1.50 per hour for night shift assignments

Position Type & Work Location

  • This position is designated essential personnel in support of 24/7/365 operations that includes nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
