Job description

Position Title: Grounds Crew Member

Reports to: Grounds Crew Leader

Supervises: None

Primary Function: Perform Grounds duties to include snow removal from roadway, stairs and sidewalks, grass mowing, trimming, weeding, flower bed maintenance, maintenance of roadway and roadway devices, fencing, athletic field lining, and unloading deliveries. Must be able to work with a diverse group of dept heads, students, tradesmen, outside contractors, vendors, and custodians.

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. 1-3 years experience in institutional grounds maintenance. Experience with athletic field turf management desired.
  2. Must possess valid driver’s license,
  3. Ability to read and write English language. Good communication skills both written and oral.
  4. Must be available for on call work during nights and weekends.
  5. Strong customer service focus.

Essential Duties:

  1. Able to operate grounds equipment, power tools, chainsaws, manlifts, etc. as necessary.
  2. Responsible for turf maintenance including seeding, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, irrigation.
  3. Responsible for snow and ice removal from roads, sidewalks, parking lots, stairs. Remove leaves, fallen branches, other weather-related debris.
  4. Responsible for care of flower and shrubs to include weeding, mulching, planting and pruning.
  5. Responsible for tree trimming as assigned.
  6. As directed by supervisor prepare for field sports events. Includes lining of outside playing fields, grooming fields, setup for athletic events. Maintain fields to standards established by NCAA Division III requirements and PAC President’s Athletic Conference.
  7. Minor repairs of roads, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks to include sealcoating and line striping. Maintain and install signage and banners on campus.
  8. Maintain tennis courts and associated items.
  9. Maintain and groom artificial turf fields.
  10. Maintain athletic fields fencing.
  11. Provide support for Steeler training camp including installing security fencing, deliver tables and chairs, build temporary tent flooring.
  12. Moving campus furniture as requested including to and from storage.
  13. Receive, unload and deliver items to various campus buildings.
  14. Set up and cleanup support for events, deliver tables, chairs, etc. to rooms, fields, other locations.
  15. Responsible for trash removal from all campus grounds. Includes hauling trash to dumpsters, litter pickup, recycling to ensure a clean attractive campus appearance.
  16. Responsible for small animal control, capture and release, including but not limited to groundhogs, skunks, and cats.
  17. Cleaning roadway drains.
  18. Outside bench repair and painting.
  19. Perform duties from written work orders.

Other Duties:

  1. Hauling of paper, furniture items to the dumpsters, and items to storage.
  2. Setting up and cleaning up from picnics, spring fest, and other outside activities.
  3. Working on weekends to line fields and preparing for games following NCAA rules.
  4. Maintaining the grounds by removing debris of all kinds.

Special Challenges and Environment:

  1. Must understand and direct how to follow safety precautions and procedures both verbal and written.
  2. Operate power equipment related to trade work such as saw, drills, backhoes, forklifts, push mowers, riding mowers, and snowplows.
  3. Must be able to adjust to continual changes while planning and finishing jobs.
  4. Must be available on call for sporting events, events, and snow removal.
