Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, patient monitoring devices, and basic medical equipment is typically required. What is a temporary licensed practical nurse?

A Temporary Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a nursing professional who holds a temporary license to practice, usually while waiting for permanent licensure or during periods of high staffing demand. Temporary LPNs perform many of the same duties as fully licensed LPNs, including providing basic patient care, administering medications, and assisting with daily living activities. Their employment is often short-term and may be in hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. This role is crucial in maintaining care quality during staffing shortages or transitional periods.

What else can I do with my licensed practical nurse license?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) can work in various healthcare settings such as clinics, long-term care facilities, and home health. They can also pursue roles in medical assisting, patient care coordination, or specialize in areas like geriatrics or pediatrics, often requiring additional certifications or training. LPNs may also advance their careers by becoming Registered Nurses (RNs) through further education and licensing.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary licensed practical nurses when adapting to new healthcare settings?

Temporary Licensed Practical Nurses often work in various healthcare environments, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities, and may encounter challenges like quickly learning new protocols, adapting to different electronic health record systems, and integrating into existing care teams. Flexibility and strong communication skills are essential, as temporary LPNs need to build rapport with both patients and colleagues in a short period. Despite these challenges, the role offers exposure to diverse settings and patient populations, which can be valuable for professional growth and networking.
