General Functions:
The Cultural Services Coordinator serves as a cultural resource across the organization, supporting the respectful integration of Indigenous values, knowledge systems, and cultural practices into programs, services, events, and organizational environments. This role helps strengthen culturally grounded approaches that support the wellbeing of participants, families, staff, and communities. The Cultural Services Coordinator works collaboratively with departments across the organization, to provide guidance on culturally responsive practices and meaningful cultural integration. The Cultural Services Coordinator provides leadership in the design, implementation, coordination and delivery of cultural programming. Working in partnership with our people, the Cultural Coordinator helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by preserving and sharing Alaska Native cultural traditions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide cultural guidance and recommendations to staff, leadership, and programs to ensure services and activities align with Indigenous values, community wellness approaches, and culturally respectful practices.
  • Exercise independent judgement in assessing cultural dynamics and recommending appropriate interventions or accommodations.
  • Support the planning and implementation of culturally grounded activities, gatherings, workshops, and events for participants, families, youth, Elders, and staff.
  • Partner with elders and cultural representatives to serve as a steward and ensure authenticity and alignment with community traditions in all programming.
  • Create culturally informed educational materials, toolkits, and resources.
  • Identify gaps in cultural knowledge and recommend professional development solutions.
  • Facilitate community listening sessions, and engagement processes using culturally appropriate methods.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and revise content based on assessed outcomes and emerging community needs.
  • Assist departments in incorporating cultural teachings, storytelling, language, land-based practices, and Indigenous values into programming where appropriate.
  • Deliver training for staff on Native history, historical trauma, Indigenous cultural protocols, and trauma-informed culturally responsive practices.
  • Create culturally welcoming and inclusive spaces that promote belonging, healing, identity, and connection for participants and employees.
  • Collaborate with teams and community partners to strengthen relationships with Tribal communities, Elders, culture bearers, and Alaska Native organizations.
  • Create a living library of culture bearers such as elders, artists, singers, speakers, and dancers.
  • Provide guidance regarding cultural protocols, respectful engagement practices, and appropriate use of cultural knowledge and materials.
  • Contribute to strategic planning by providing perspective on Indigenous equity, self-determination, and community-centered approaches.
  • Participate in organizational and community events as a representative and cultural resource when appropriate.
  • Recognize and uphold that some cultural knowledge, practices, and teachings are protected, community-specific, or not intended for public sharing.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency with computers, including word processing, email communication, internet research, spreadsheets, and childcare management software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in staff training and development, with focus on implementing exceptional customer service practices.
  • Ability to coach and collaborate effectively within a team environment, promoting positive relationships and teamwork.
  • Knowledge and ability to facilitate and manage large-scale cultural programming projects, including planning, execution, and outcome reporting.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively across the organization and with external community partners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alaska Native cultural values, lifeways, and community protocols.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills grounded in reciprocity, respect, and cultural humility.
  • Experience sharing cultural knowledge in ways that are ethical, appropriate, and aligned while honoring cultural diversity between regions and peoples.
  • Experience participating in cultural activities, subsistence practices, language revitalization, youth engagement, community engagement, Elder engagement, or Indigenous education initiatives.
  • Combinations of lived experience, active connection with Alaska Native communities, community leadership, cultural knowledge, mentorship, and formal education.

Minimum Core Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Associate's degree in the field of language, culture, education or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.
  • Experience sharing cultural knowledge in ways that are ethical, appropriate, and aligned while honoring cultural diversity between regions and peoples.
  • Experience participating in cultural activities, subsistence practices, language revitalization, youth engagement, community engagement, Elder engagement, or Indigenous education initiatives.
  • Combinations of lived experience, active connection with Alaska Native communities, community leadership, cultural knowledge, mentorship, and formal education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Alaska Native language knowledge or revitalization experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in the field of language, culture, education or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience facilitating cross-cultural learning between Indigenous and Western systems.

  • May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion.
  • The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
