Job Description

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking Gymnastics Assistants for multiple temporary positions supporting instructors and working with children and adults in our Gymnastics Program. These roles assist with Competitive Team programs and help provide safe, fun, and high-quality gymnastics instruction to the Arlington County community.
Our well-established program includes two USA Gymnastics member clubs, the Arlington Aerials and Arlington Tigers, offering Development Program Levels 3-10 and Xcel/Club Levels Silver-Diamond (Platinum for Tigers). Teams compete at the local, state, regional, and national levels under the guidance of experienced gymnastics instructors.
Responsibilities
Specific Tasks Include:
  • Assisting instructors and programmers with supervision of athletes during gymnastics practices, preparing for practices, and implementing lesson plans and curriculum;
  • Setting up equipment prior to practices, securing equipment afterward, and assisting athletes with proper equipment usage;
  • Participating in practices by engaging athletes;
  • Performing administrative activities and attending staff meetings; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to assist with intermediate to upper-level youth and adult classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex and require considerable technical experience.
Qualifications
Minimum: Some experience with gymnastics or administering recreational programs.
*Gymnastics experience may come from a variety of sources, such as work, volunteering or formal athletic participation.
Substitutions Additional education may be substituted for experience. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates the following:
  • Women's or Men's competitive gymnastics (any competitive levels)
  • Involvement in a competitive or recreational gymnastics program as an athlete;
  • Coaching or teaching gymnastics;
  • USA Gymnastics Competitive Coach, USA Gymnastics Recreational Coach, First Aid, CPR certifications and/or other gymnastics certifications; and/or
  • Working with children of all ages.

Special Requirements
  • A complete application will include an attached resume which highlights how your background and experience align with the qualifications for this position.
  • Selected candidates must possess or obtain Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information
Work Hours: Part-time, temporary position working 15-30 hours per week. Shifts are primarily weekday evenings and weekends and may change with little to no notice.
  • Weekdays: 4:00 PM-8:30 PM
  • Saturdays: 8:30 AM-6:00 PM
  • Sundays: 12:00 PM-7:00 PM

Please Note: This Gymnastics position is classified under the Competitive Teams program; however, it functions as a hybrid role. Incumbents may be required, with little or no advance notice, to perform Recreation Gymnastics duties in addition to Competitive Team responsibilities for an indefinite period of time
