Job Duties
Position Summary:
The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of athletic performance programming for the Men's Basketball program. This position will utilize sports science and performance technologies to optimize athlete development, monitor readiness, reduce injury risk, and enhance competitive performance. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with coaching staff, athletic trainers, and sports medicine personnel to create a high-performance environment aligned with the values, standards, and mission of Virginia Military Institute (VMI). In addition to overseeing Men's Basketball performance operations, the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will support the Football Strength & Conditioning staff as directed by the Director of Football Strength & Conditioning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Learning Agility: Ability to learn new systems, technologies, and training methodologies while adapting to evolving program needs
- Teamwork: Demonstrates the ability to collaborate effectively within a performance team environment
- Technical Proficiency: Competent in the use of office software, data tracking systems, and performance technology
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills
Position Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and oversee all phases of the Strength and Conditioning program for Men's Basketball, including:
• Strength and power Development
• Ability to create programs to enhance explosiveness
• Conditioning and multi-directional movements
• Injury prevention and return-to-play modalities
• Assist in shaping the culture of the VMI basketball program within the view of the Head Coach and the VMI standards.
• Utilize multiple sport science modalities to enhance recovery, wellness and performance. Coaching and Athlete Development:
• Provide expert instruction and supervision of all strength and conditioning activities to ensure proper technique, training efficiency, and athlete safety.
• Foster a culture of accountability, discipline, competitiveness, and continuous improvement that aligns with VMI's core values and the vision of the Head Men's Basketball Coach.
• Build meaningful relationships with student-athletes while maintaining high standards and expectations.
Staff Communication and Collaboration:
• Communicate regularly with the Head Men's Basketball Coach regarding athlete performance, workload management, readiness, and training adaptations.
• Provide timely feedback and recommendations to sport coaches to support athlete development and team success.
• Collaborate with athletic training and sports medicine personnel regarding return-to-play progressions and athlete health management.
Football Strength & Conditioning Support
• Assist the Director of Football Strength & Conditioning with all aspects of football athletic performance operations when not engaged in Men's Basketball responsibilities.
• Support departmental initiatives, testing protocols, facility management, and team training sessions as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field required
Experience: Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience required
Certifications: CSCS, CSSCA, or USAW required

1. Maintain compliance with all institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
2. Participate in departmental meetings and professional development opportunities.
3. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Football Performance and Head Men's Basketball Coach.
