Description GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of a variety of equipment and heavy equipment, including asphalt rollers, water trucks, dump trucks, ASL packers, street sweepers, roll-off, front load, and rear load refuse units in the Public Works Department. Note: The current vacancy is located at our Landfill but this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in other Divisions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.
Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Operates a variety of heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. When assigned to public works, performs scheduled maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm water drainage systems, and retention basins; hauls, transports, loads and/or unloads various material and equipment associated with assigned projects.
Maintains dirt roads, shoulders, constructing and maintaining temporary parking lots; performs asphalt repair and replacement; excavates, sweeps, dumps, rakes, spreads, and rolls/compacts asphalt; performs all forms of concrete form setting, concrete placement and concrete finishing related to street maintenance. When assigned to Solid Waste, collects waste from containers by following assigned route, operating heavy equipment to pick up containers, emptying and transporting containers back to original location, picking up and disposing of debris and bulky items. Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections of equipment, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair; performs load inspections to prevent hazardous waste spills or dangerous road conditions.
Provides assistance with other routes, cleans facilities, delivers containers to customers, cleans inside of refuse containers, and providing information to customers as needed. Completes required daily logs and reports. Hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks.
Loads and unloads materials using power equipment. Performs skilled construction, maintenance and labor work. Resurfaces and grades and shapes roads.
Operates power equipment to collect trash and refuse. May assist in overseeing the work of, and providing training and direction to, new employees. Aids in emergency and storm related activities.
Performs overtime as required. Performs other duties as assigned or required. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
Minimum Requirements Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED equivalent, and three (3) year's experience driving trucks and operating equipment. Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License Class A with tanker endorsement. Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License Class A with tanker endorsement; special technical certifications may be required for some work assignments.
Supplemental Information Necessary Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of City policies and procedures. Knowledge of safety standards and practices. Knowledge of traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation, as well as traffic control and flagging procedures.
Knowledge of hazards and precautions in using heavy equipment. Knowledge of methods, materials, and practices of street and right-of-way maintenance, and asphalt repair. Skill in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of trucks and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
Skill in making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment. Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions. Skill in providing quality customer service and stay calm during difficult customer situations.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors and in Public Works and City facilities including in roadways and areas of high motor vehicle traffic.
