What are Temporary Engineering Geologists?

Temporary Engineering Geologists are professionals hired on a short-term basis to assess and analyze geological conditions at construction or engineering sites. They evaluate factors such as soil stability, rock formations, groundwater conditions, and potential geological hazards to inform safe and effective project design and implementation. Their expertise helps ensure that construction projects comply with safety regulations and minimize environmental impact. Temporary roles may be project-based or to cover specific periods of high workload.

What are some unique challenges faced by Temporary Engineering Geologists in project-based assignments?

Temporary Engineering Geologists often work on short-term projects, which means they must quickly adapt to new sites, teams, and local geological conditions. Rapid learning and effective communication are essential, as there's limited time to become familiar with each project's specific requirements. Balancing fieldwork with timely data analysis and reporting deadlines can be demanding, especially when weather or site conditions are unpredictable. Collaboration with engineers, contractors, and other geoscientists is frequent, requiring strong teamwork and adaptability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Engineering Geologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Engineering Geologist, you typically need a degree in geology or a related field, strong analytical skills, and experience with field investigations. Familiarity with geotechnical software, GIS tools, soil and rock testing procedures, and relevant certifications like a CSCS card are commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating with project teams and handling dynamic site conditions. These competencies ensure accurate site assessments, compliance with safety standards, and successful project outcomes in a temporary, fast-paced environment.

Job description

Environmental Project Manager

(Pay Rate: $90,000-$110,000)

About the Company

A well-established environmental consulting firm known for delivering high-quality, practical solutions to complex environmental challenges. Their team specializes in site investigation, remediation, and regulatory compliance, with a strong focus on petroleum-impacted sites and groundwater/soil systems.

With a reputation built on technical excellence, responsiveness, and integrity, they partner closely with clients across the private and public sectors to deliver projects efficiently and effectively. Their culture values ownership, accountability, and collaboration—empowering professionals to take the lead on meaningful work while maintaining a healthy balance between field execution and strategic project delivery.

Position Summary

They are seeking a Project Geologist / Environmental Project Manager to lead environmental remediation and site investigation projects from start to finish. This role is highly execution-focused and critical to ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to high technical standards.

You will take full ownership of technical reporting, oversee field activities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. This position is designed to reduce senior team workload, prevent project bottlenecks, and drive quality outcomes through independent leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead environmental remediation projects involving soil, groundwater, vapor, and petroleum-impacted sites (including gas stations)
  • Own environmental reports end-to-end, from data collection through final submittals
  • Interpret field and laboratory data to develop clear conclusions and actionable recommendations
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee field programs (sampling, investigations, testing)
  • Serve as the primary point of coordination between internal teams, clients, and subcontractors
  • Work independently with minimal oversight while maintaining high standards of execution
  • Support senior staff by taking full ownership of project reporting and technical deliverables
  • Maintain well-organized project documentation and proactively communicate progress and risks
  • Identify potential issues early and implement solutions to keep projects on track

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • 5–10+ years of environmental consulting experience (4+ years considered with strong project ownership)
  • Hands-on experience with environmental remediation (soil, groundwater, vapor, petroleum sites)
  • Strong understanding of the remediation lifecycle, including Phase II investigations and reporting
  • Proven ability to own and deliver high-quality technical reports independently
  • Experience managing multiple projects with competing priorities
  • Background working on gas station and petroleum-impacted sites
  • Field experience conducting groundwater, soil, and soil vapor sampling
  • Strong data analysis, interpretation, and decision-making capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a self-directed environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Willingness to travel and perform fieldwork (10–20%)

Why Join Us
  • High-impact role with true project ownership and autonomy
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful environmental projects from start to finish
  • Collaborative team environment that values technical excellence and accountability
  • Career growth based on performance and leadership, not tenure alone
