About the role

DNV Energy Systems' Power Systems Advisory group has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Power System Study Engineer with a focus in EMT Studies, in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. Our team provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in the power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Senior Engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert in delivering technical insights and delighting customers with excellent customer service.

Location

This role ideally will be based at our DNV office in Dallas (TX), Austin (TX), Houston (TX), Oak Brook (IL), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), or Medford (MA) with a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within US.

What You'll Do
  • Perform Electro‑magnetic Transient (EMT) Studies such as sub synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro‑resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization etc.
  • Develop/tune PSCAD models, perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analysis
  • Produce and/or review quality technical reports and presentations for external Customers and for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Timely completion of projects assigned while meeting project quality and project budget
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in EMT and special studies
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for area related to transmission grid reliability
  • Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations
  • Actively attend (in person or remote) industry stakeholder meetings
  • Stay up to date with assigned market changes in terms of NERC, FERC planning procedures, policy changes and developments
  • Contribute to the team's research and innovation activities in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to further the team's performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements
  • Cultivate new customer relationships, and assist in preparing responses to Requests for Proposals (RFP) and provide Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) for new tenders/bids/opportunities

Compensation

For California, Washington, New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and Maryland: DNV provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. The actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. For the states of California, Washington, New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and Maryland only, the starting pay range for this role is $135,000 - $190,000.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • Minimum 5 + years of working experience at Utility, ISO/RTO, Consulting environment or renewable energy development companies
  • Minimum 5 + years of hands‑on experiences with power‑system tools such as PSCAD
  • In‑depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems, renewable energy and EMT studies
  • Direct work experience in transmission planning and development, generation, or load interconnection related analyses
  • Knowledge of North American ISO/RTO grid interconnection and corresponding planning practices, system impact studies, NERC standards such as TPL/MOD/CIP
  • Working knowledge of automation scripts such as Python
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active PE License
  • Graduate level degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems
  • Hands on experience performing EMT Studies
  • Demonstrable hands‑on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN, PSLF
  • Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices
  • Knowledge of other Electricity Markets (such as PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE and CAISO) planning & interconnection practices
