Temporary Employment information

What are temporary employment jobs?

Temporary employment jobs, often called 'temp jobs,' are positions that are filled for a limited period of time. These roles can last from a single day to several months and are commonly used to cover short-term needs such as seasonal work, employee absences, or special projects. Temporary employees may be hired directly by a company or through a staffing agency. While temp jobs typically do not offer the same benefits as permanent positions, they can provide valuable work experience and a pathway to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in temporary employment, and why are they important?

To thrive in temporary employment, you need adaptability, a quick learning ability, and a general educational background that matches the assignment's requirements. Familiarity with common office software, time tracking systems, or industry-specific tools can be beneficial depending on the role. Strong communication, reliability, and a positive attitude help you integrate quickly and make a strong impression. These skills and qualities are important because they enable you to meet employer expectations, contribute effectively, and increase your chances of securing future opportunities.

What types of industries or roles are most common for temporary employment, and how does this affect day-to-day responsibilities?

Temporary employment opportunities are frequently found in industries such as administrative support, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and customer service. Your daily responsibilities will be shaped by the specific assignment and can range from data entry and clerical tasks to light industrial work or assisting during peak seasons. Temp roles often require adaptability, as you may be asked to quickly learn new systems or integrate into different teams. This variety can offer valuable exposure to various work environments and help you build a diverse skill set.

What is the difference between Temporary Employment vs Part-Time Employment?

AspectTemporary EmploymentPart-Time Employment
DurationShort-term, project-based or seasonalOngoing, regular schedule but fewer hours
Work HoursVaries, often full-time during contractLess than full-time, typically fewer than 30 hours/week
Job SecurityLess secure, limited to contract lengthMore stable, ongoing employment
BenefitsUsually none or limitedMay include some benefits depending on employer

Temporary employment involves short-term, contract-based work with limited job security and benefits, often used for seasonal or project needs. Part-time employment is ongoing but with fewer hours per week, offering more stability but fewer benefits than full-time roles. Both serve different employment needs and are common in various industries.

What are common types of temporary employment?

Temporary employment includes roles such as seasonal work, contract positions, temp agency assignments, and project-based jobs. These roles often require specific skills, may involve short-term schedules, and can be found across various industries like retail, healthcare, and administration.

At Lumen, you'll work on infrastructure customers rely on today and build for what's next, where performance, security, and resilience matter.

This is a high accountability environment where bold ideas drive real innovation for our customers, partners, and industry. The work is challenging, expectations are clear, and trust is built into how we operate. If you're ready to take ownership, deliver meaningful impact, and help shape the future of AIready connectivity, join us today.

The Role

This is a temporary position with an expected duration of approximately 12-18 months. This expectation does not alter the at-will nature of employment, meaning either the Company or the employee may terminate employment at any time, with or without cause or notice.

Lumen is seeking an experienced employment attorney to join our Legal team in a temporary capacity. In this role, you will provide practical, business-focused legal counsel to Human Resources and business leaders on a broad range of employment matters, helping the organization navigate risk while supporting workforce and business objectives.

Working closely with stakeholders across the company, you will advise on complex employment law issues, manage sensitive employee matters, and help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. This role requires strong legal judgment, a collaborative approach, and the ability to balance legal risk with business priorities.

The Main Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day employment law advice and counsel to Human Resources and business leaders.
  • Assess legal risk and recommend practical solutions that align with business objectives and risk tolerance.
  • Advise management on complex employment matters, including compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the organization to support employee relations, workforce management, and policy-related issues.
  • Respond to employment-related claims, demands, wage disputes, and administrative charges.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel on specialized or international employment law matters, as needed.
  • Build trusted relationships with business leaders and serve as a strategic legal advisor on employment-related issues.
What We Look For in a Candidate
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active license in good standing to practice law in the state where the attorney is based.
  • 8+ years of in-house employment law counseling experience supporting a large, multi-state organization.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, with experience advising on employee relations matters, workforce restructuring, leave management, labor relations, and compliance investigations.
  • Experience responding to agency charges, wage claims, and employment-related disputes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise, influence, and build credibility with senior stakeholders.
  • Sound legal and business judgment, with the ability to independently manage complex matters and balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with emerging employment-related legal developments, including AI-related workplace considerations.
