Job description

Registered Nurse (RN) — Emergency Shelter Operations

County / Location Lee County, FL — North Fort Myers (Southwest Florida)

Employer: Essential HealthCare Solutions, LLC

Job Type: PRN / Temporary — Storm Activation

Shifts: 12-hour shifts, days/nights; up to 24/7 coverage; up to 14 days

Pay: Competitive

About the Role

Essential HealthCare Solutions, LLC is building a roster of Florida-licensed Registered Nurses to deliver on-site nursing care at employee shelters during hurricane and severe-weather events in Southwest Florida. As the licensed clinical anchor at a shelter, you keep the line crews, contractors, and emergency personnel working to restore power healthy, safe, and fit for duty.

At minimum, one Florida-licensed RN is maintained on-site per shelter throughout each activation. This is on-call, activation-based work ideal for nurses who want meaningful disaster-response experience and flexible, well-compensated deployments.

Deployment Locations & Environment

Deployable to any of the three LCEC-designated shelter sites in North Fort Myers (Lee County), and to other facilities identified in writing by the Cooperative during an activation:

  • 4980 Bayline Drive, North Fort Myers, FL 33917
  • 141 East Mariana Avenue, North Fort Myers, FL 33917
  • LCEC Basecamp, Williams Road, North Fort Myers, FL 33917

Shelter occupants may include Cooperative employees, line crews, vegetation-management contractors, mutual-aid personnel, emergency-operations staff, and authorized support personnel — populations of 50 to 500+ operating continuously for 24 hours to 14 days.

    What You'll Do

  • Conduct medical screening and health assessments of shelter occupants; evaluate non-emergency illnesses and injuries; assess fitness-for-duty concerns when requested by Cooperative management
  • Provide basic medical care — first aid, vital-sign monitoring, and management of minor illnesses and injuries — consistent with standing nursing protocols
  • Triage medical complaints, determine the appropriate level of care, and coordinate referral to urgent care, hospital, or EMS; document triage decisions and disposition
  • Respond to on-site medical incidents within five (5) minutes (met through continuous on-site presence) and provide emergency nursing care within scope until EMS assumes care
  • Monitor for heat illness, dehydration, fatigue, infectious-disease concerns, and mental-health stress indicators
  • Implement infection-prevention practices (hand hygiene, PPE, surface disinfection, surveillance) and recommend isolation or mitigation measures
  • Set up and manage the shelter medical station and maintain medical-supply inventory; request replenishment as needed
  • Maintain accurate documentation — service encounters, incident reports, supply-usage reports — supporting daily operational nursing reports and the after-action report
  • Direct on-site LPNs and CNAs and coordinate with EMS, hospitals, emergency management, and Cooperative safety personnel
  • Escalate serious incidents (death, hospitalization, EMS transport, suspected outbreak, significant injury) promptly to Cooperative management and EHS leadership

    What You'll Bring

  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the State of Florida (or multistate / Nurse Licensure Compact privilege valid in Florida) — required
  • Current BLS certification — required (ACLS/PALS preferred)
  • Ability to pass a background screening
  • Ability to practice only within the scope of Florida RN licensure — no diagnosing or prescribing absent lawful medical-oversight authorization
  • Availability to deploy on short notice and work extended 12-hour shifts in shelter/field conditions

Preferred: prior emergency, storm, shelter, or field-medical experience; triage experience; ICS/FEMA (NIMS) familiarity

Schedule & Conditions

This is activation-based work. Deployments are triggered by storm events — from up to 72 hours before anticipated landfall, through impact, and into recovery — for periods of 24 hours to 14 consecutive days. You will work 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, in shelter and temporary-facility settings. Meals and lodging are provided during qualifying deployments, and PPE is supplied.

Upon activation, you acknowledge the assignment within one (1) hour and confirm availability, roster placement, estimated deployment time, and emergency-contact information.

Why Join Essential HealthCare Solutions

  • Meaningful work supporting Southwest Florida's storm-response and power-restoration mission
  • A role on a live, awarded emergency-response contract with a respected electric cooperative
  • Activation and deployment pay, with meals and lodging provided during qualifying deployments
  • Flexible, on-call commitment — you deploy when storms activate
