Description
The City of Kodiak Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for temporary Maintenance Assistants. Employee is responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and some semi-skilled maintenance activities under direction of more experienced personnel. Responsibilities will generally include: digging; loading and unloading materials; assisting skilled staff with moderate to complex repairs and maintenance activities; operating light equipment and vehicles; and conducting basic maintenance activities.
Examples Of Essential Duties
  • Perform routine maintenance duties on applicable facilities, tools, and equipment under direction of supervisory personnel, which may include lawn maintenance, digging, loading/unloading materials, and related duties.
  • Provides routine assistance to skilled staff with repairs and maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Operates light equipment and vehicles and performs routine maintenance activities as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Must have achieved a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED). Prefer up to one year of general construction or labor experience. Valid driver's license required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull; to operate assigned tools, equipment and vehicles; travel from site to site; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Some work indoors in office or shop environment, with the majority of work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. Outdoor work often performed in inclement weather under physically demanding situations. Exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, gases, vibrations, mechanical and electrical hazards; hazardous traffic conditions; work space restrictions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; and work at heights. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the noise level is occasionally louder due to the operation of tools and equipment. Occasional contact with the general public.
May be required to work outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather. Non-traditional work hours may be required.
Temporary employment is for short-term periods or for work on an irregular basis. A person selected for a temporary position is not eligible for any benefits.
