Job description

Work with some of the most exciting artists in the industry on outstanding illustrations. Magic: the Gathering, the world's first and best-in-class Trading Card Game, is hiring a new Commissioning Art Director to work on our exciting Universes Beyond product line!

Are you a curious, highly engaged, and experienced visual creative who is immersed in fantasy art and passionate about pop culture? Are you interested in working within an established brand/IP while constantly looking to grow the brand's audience and visual expression? If so, please apply today!

What You'll Do:
  • Commission a high volume of artwork by: identifying freelance illustrators for each piece, providing continuous art direction on individual pieces, maintaining solid relationships with those partners, and providing regular updates to the card concent producer on art status.
  • Research and understand partner brand IP(s), translate reference into customized style guides, and successfully art direct to the specifications of external partners' brands.
  • Review print-ready files to ensure final card quality.
What You'll Bring:
  • 2+ yrs commercial art experience.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and comfortable giving and receiving feedback
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong creative vision with a cinematic lens.
  • A passion for pop culture and a pulse on current entertainment industry trends
  • Understanding of Magic as both a game and a brand.
  • Deep knowledge of current fantasy illustration market/talent and modern print/press techniques and processes. Have an interest in discovering diverse, emerging artists
  • Adept in Adobe Photoshop, proficient MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook).
Additional Details:
Please note that this is a temporary assignment providing services to Wizards through an external staffing agency. If you are selected for this assignment, you will be employed by Workwell as a W2 employee and will not be an employee of Wizards.

Compensation Range, Currency USD:
  • Starting Pay Range: $60/hour
  • Pay Range End: $70/hour
