Position Summary
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or diagnostic procedures. The PACU RN monitors patients during the immediate post-operative period, assesses recovery from anesthesia, manages pain and complications, and collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess, monitor, and care for patients recovering from general, regional, and monitored anesthesia.
  • Perform comprehensive post-anesthesia assessments, including airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and pain evaluations.
  • Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, cardiac rhythm, and level of consciousness.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to post-operative complications, including respiratory distress, hemodynamic instability, bleeding, nausea, and adverse reactions.
  • Administer prescribed medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and pain management therapies.
  • Maintain airway patency and provide oxygen therapy and emergency interventions as needed.
  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and perioperative staff to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Educate patients and families regarding post-operative care, discharge instructions, medications, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
  • Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, medications, and recovery progress in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ensure patients meet established discharge criteria before transfer to inpatient units or discharge home.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and department training.
Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing; BSN preferred).
  • Minimum of one year of PACU, critical care, emergency department, or intensive care nursing experience preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred for facilities caring for pediatric patients.
  • Moderate Sedation competency and certification as required by facility policy.
  • Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of anesthesia recovery, post-operative care, and pain management principles.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient education skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation.
  • Ability to prioritize care and function effectively in a fast-paced perioperative environment.
  • Commitment to delivering safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain active throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift, reposition, and transfer patients using safe patient handling techniques.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform nursing procedures and operate specialized monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively during medical emergencies.
