Job description

Your Impact at LILA

Lila Sciences is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op to join our Hardware and Controls (HCE) - Mechanical team this summer. You'll work on real hardware that powers autonomous scientific discovery, designing, building, and testing systems alongside experimental scientists, AI/ML researchers, and software/controls engineers throughout life science and physical science applications. From CAD to prototype to initial test builds, your work will directly contribute to Lila's mission of building Scientific Superintelligence.

What You'll Be Building

  • Design and engineer components ranging from bench-scale robotics to full-size lab automation workcells, using knowledge of mechanical system design.
  • Work with cross-functional teams on CAD design and analysis.
  • Create and test engineered solutions using 3D printing and other fabrication methods. These solutions will range from static fixtures to multi-axis motion assemblies.
  • Support assembly and build processes with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Take ownership of discrete project tasks end to end, from spec to delivery.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD design (Parts and Assemblies) or similar parametric 3D CAD software.
  • Proactive mindset with eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to balance input and collaborate across multiple teams or stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Curiosity about life science or physical science automation.

Bonus Points For

  • A basic understanding of GD&T.
  • Experience with designing parts for specific fabrication techniques (Milling, Lathing, Sheet Metal, 3D Printing).
  • Previous internship/co-op experience in industrial automation, lab automation, or R&D industries.
  • Experience with robotics, industrial controls, electrical engineering, or automation software/programming.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM.
