Job description

Summary
The Teller position receives and pays out money and keeps records of money and negotiable instruments involved in financial transactions by performing the following duties.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Education/Certification
    • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Required knowledge
    • Knowledge of basic word processing, spreadsheet applications, and understanding of credit union products and services.
  • Experience
    • One to two years of related experience.
  • Skills/Abilities
    • Excellent communication skills.

    • Well organized.
    • Ability to assist and teach others.

Qualifications and Work Environment
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence, memos, and effectively present information to members, vendors, and employees of the organization.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills including the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use and understand current business software applications and able to troubleshoot and repair basic computer problems.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Frequently required to sit, talk, stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Ability to use hands and fingers, handle and feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
    • Vision requirements include the ability to see close, far, see color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Represents ECU to the membership politely, courteously, and professionally.
  • Provides prompt, efficient, and accurate service in processing member transactions.
  • Provides routine information on credit union services or policies, including membership eligibility, deposit account information, dividend rates, credit union address, hours of operations, telephone and fax numbers and extensions, etc.
  • Receives, processes, and authenticates members' financial transactions, including deposits, withdrawals, loan payments, credit card advances, line of credit loans, and account transfers upon proper identification.
  • Opens, closes, and balances teller station.
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of cash recycler.
  • Balances coin tray daily.
  • Processes loose coin for members.
  • Monitors lobby and drive up for potential fraud and robbery suspects.
  • Monitors all transactions for counterfeit bills and possible bogus checks at all times.
  • Coordinates time away from the teller station with the Supervisor to ensure required line teller presence on teller lines at all times.
  • Receives checks and cash for deposit to share savings and checking accounts, verifies deposit amounts, examines checks for proper endorsements and negotiability, and enters transactions into the credit union's computer system via terminal.
  • Provides members with receipts for deposits, withdrawals, and payment transactions.
  • Understands and applies appropriated Regulation D rules regarding telephone check withdrawal requests to third parties.
  • Understands and applies appropriate holds on deposits according to Regulation CC and gives members appropriate disclosure.
  • Understands and applies appropriate rules under the Bank Secrecy Act on cash deposits and withdrawals.
  • Performs entries into various General Ledger accounts as requested by ECU staff members.
  • Provides and assists members with forms necessary to conduct business with ECU.
  • Maintains an appropriate level of supplies for member use in the lobby.
  • Processes and posts incoming mail transactions.
  • Provides members with account status, including current balances and loan payoffs.
  • Assists members with discrepancies in statements, membership accounts, and complaints.
  • Provide members with copies of their statements.
  • Assists in the inventory of printer stock for money orders and cashier checks.
  • Encodes temporary checks at member's request.
  • Opens and distributes incoming mail to appropriate departments.
  • Cross-sells other credit union services.
  • Receives and routes check orders and various information to appropriate department personnel.
  • Processes address changes on member accounts.
  • Assists in mailing out loan payments as required.
  • Must be able to lift bagged coin.

General Duties and Responsibilities
General duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Maintains ongoing communications with Management, informing them of all pertinent problems, irregularities, new developments, changes, and other important information within area of responsibility.
  • Cooperates with other department personnel to ensure a "team effort" and prompt member service.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive image of the credit union to assigned personnel, members, and the community.
  • Follows safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that all information and transactions regarding credit union operations and members are kept confidential.
  • Maintains the security of the work area and keeps it organized and neat in appearance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of credit union philosophy, plus all credit union services and policies.
  • Cross-sells credit union products and services.
  • Participates in continuing education as approved by Senior Management.
  • Maintains a professional and courteous attitude with all people, including fellow employees, members, management staff, board members, and outside vendors.
  • Protects and respects credit union equipment and supplies.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Adheres to ECU Employee Personnel Policy and Guidelines Handbook.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive image of ECU to members and the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Senior Management.
