Job description

BHCC Disability Support Services is seeking an Access Services Assistant to support communication access for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and to support other accommodations for prospective and current students participating in campus events. This role will focus on coordinating ASL interpreting and CART captioning services through the college’s contracted interpreting agency, as well as supporting students in accessing and using these services effectively, supporting other accommodation needs of prospective and current students as assigned by the Director of Disability Support Services. This support may include supporting the Testing Proctors during high volume times, supporting peer note-taking logistics during high volume time and other accommodation administrative and logistical support as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Service Coordination (Primary Function):

  • Work directly with the college’s contracted interpreting agency to schedule ASL interpreters and CART captioners for prospective students.
  • Coordinate logistics to ensure interpreters and captioners are scheduled accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Arrange parking passes and other access needs for interpreters and service providers.
  • Work directly with DSS staff to support student accommodation facilitation as assigned.

Student Support & Communication:

  • Communicates with students, DSS staff, hosting dept. staff regarding logistics for requested accommodations
  • Reaches out to prospective students who request ASL or CART services to confirm attendance and service needs.
  • Assist students in getting set up with CART captioning on their devices, including microphone setup and troubleshooting.
  • Provide basic guidance to students on accessing and using accommodations effectively.
  • In collaboration with vendor, confirms scheduling of requested services and confirms services rendered.
  • Tracks student requests and assists with data collection.
  • Conducts logistical outreach to student, faculty and staff regarding accommodations as assigned.

Technology & Access Setup:

  • Supports students with online requests for accommodations.
  • Support students and service providers with initial technology setup for CART captioning.
  • In collaboration with BHCC IT, troubleshoots common issues related to captioning access and communication tools.
  • In collaboration with DSS Assistive Technology Specialist, troubleshoots regarding AT equipment within DSS.

Records & Coordination:

  • Maintain accurate scheduling records and communication logs.
  • Ensure coordination aligns with ADA and Section 504 requirements.
  • Communicate updates or scheduling changes to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintains confidentiality as required.

General Support:

  • Assists the Disability Support Services office with other duties related to student accommodation needs as assigned by the Director of Disability Support Services.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience coordinating schedules, services, or logistics.
  • Experience working with students or in an educational setting preferred.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and students with other disabilities.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity with ASL, CART services, and Deaf culture preferred.
  • Comfort with technology and troubleshooting basic device and audio setup.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.

Additional Information:

Salary: $26.26 an hour up to 18.5 hours per week. Part-Time flexible hours. Flexibility and ability to work some evening hours and weekend hours when required.
