What is a temporary call boy?

Temporary Call Boys are workers, often in theater or stage production settings, who are responsible for relaying cues and messages to performers and crew during rehearsals or live performances. They are hired on a short-term or per-show basis to ensure that actors and technical staff are in the right place at the right time. Their main job is to facilitate smooth operations behind the scenes by providing timely reminders and instructions as directed by stage management.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a temporary call boy in a theater production?

A Temporary Call Boy in a theater production is responsible for ensuring that cast members are in the right place at the right time, particularly before and during performances. Daily tasks include relaying cues, informing actors of their upcoming scenes, and helping maintain backstage order. One common challenge is managing timing under the pressure of live performances, where communication must be clear and precise to avoid delays. The role often requires quick thinking, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with stage managers, actors, and other crew members. This position can provide valuable insight into backstage operations and may open doors to more permanent roles in stage management or theater production.
