Job description

ALCOSAN is committed to providing wastewater treatment services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From our Board of Directors to our Executive Director, leadership and staff; we work to enhance the community's quality of life and safety by protecting our rivers and streams. After 60 years of continued design, construction and operations of the sewer system and treatment plant, we now have 400 plus employees serving residential, commercial and industrial customers in 83 communities throughout Allegheny County.
Position Summary
Inspects, replaces, installs, adjusts, fabricates, repairs and maintains all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and air moving equipment and filters, and makes all necessary repairs to such equipment. Maintains, repairs and calibrates pollution control air handlers, dampers and HVAC system controls as required. Performs air balance and calibration as needed. Designates areas of steam system for service or repair.
Job Duties
  • Works on all electrical equipment pertaining to air-conditioning and heating up to and including 480 volts.
  • Works on all instruments pertaining to air-conditioning, heating and air moving equipment and filters, including high-voltage electrical filters.
  • Plans repair work according to manufacturer's blueprints, specifications, and instructions.
  • Makes all necessary repairs and adjustments to air-conditioning, heating equipment, and air moving equipment (odor control).
  • Receives instructions covering the scheduled and/or emergency repair, installation and inspection work to be done; assists in ordering parts.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints.
  • Inspects equipment for defects such as misalignment, wear, insufficient lubrication, balance, etc.
  • Determines from a mechanical standpoint the best way of making repairs to minimize interruption of operation.
  • Advises when immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporarily continued operations will have no harmful effect.
  • Dismantles, cleans, repairs, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles and lubricates equipment (air conditioning, heating, and all air moving equipment and filters).
  • Adjusts equipment for proper operating characteristics.
  • Makes either temporary or permanent repairs.
  • Assembles and aligns gears, bearings and shafts involving the application of press, sliding and running fits.
  • Operates simple machine tools such as drill press, pipe-threading machine, power saw, etc.
  • Erects scaffold and performs simple rigging as necessary.
  • Changes, sets up and adjusts equipment as required by current operating conditions.
  • Cleans up area after work is done.
  • Repairs, maintains and erects structural and miscellaneous iron work and pipe work.
  • Prepares daily work report and time sheet.
  • Operates all cranes for maintenance of equipment.
  • Trains apprentices at above duties.

Minimum Education Level Required
1. At a minimum, must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.
2. Must possess a Journeyman Card through formal training, or an Associate's Degree or Technical School Certification in HVAC/Refrigeration. HVAC EPA Type I, II, or III Certifications is also required.
Minimum Experience Required
1. Must possess at least three (3) years of relevant commercial / industrial experience.
Required Certifications / Licenses
1. Must possess a current / valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.
2. Must possess the physical agility to access all process areas (example: ability to climb a ladder)
