Job description

Heavy Civil Construction Estimator - Bridge, Dam & Marine Infrastructure Projects

Who We're Hiring For:

Our client is a specialized heavy civil contractor performing complex excavation, bridge, dam rehabilitation, marine, and heavy concrete work throughout Maine and New Hampshire. They are a small, highly capable team that takes on technically challenging infrastructure projects.

Types of Projects:

  • Dam rehabilitation and spillway reconstruction
  • Bridge and culvert replacement
  • Marine and waterfront construction
  • Structural concrete and cofferdam work
  • Heavy excavation and site development
  • Remote and logistically challenging public infrastructure projects

This firm is looking for an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator who can independently manage the bidding process for public and private infrastructure work and help them continue growing strategically. Someone who understands means and methods, can think through a project from start to finish, and can produce accurate, competitive bids in real-world field conditions, who wants to have a major impact on the company's success, will be a great fit!

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Reviewing plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and bid documents
  • Performing detailed quantity takeoffs and cost analysis
  • Building complete estimates for labor, equipment, materials, trucking, subcontractors, and self-performed work
  • Developing bid strategies and identifying project risks and opportunities
  • Soliciting and leveling subcontractor and supplier quotes
  • Coordinating with ownership and project management during pursuit and preconstruction phases
  • Preparing bid proposals and supporting documentation
  • Participating in scope reviews, site visits, and pre-bid meetings when necessary
  • Helping improve internal estimating systems, production tracking, and historical cost databases
  • Supporting project handoff and occasional operational planning after award

What We’re Looking For / Required Experience

  • 5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction with a strong background in several of the following:
  • Bridge construction
  • Dam rehabilitation
  • Heavy excavation
  • Structural concrete
  • Marine or waterfront work
  • DOT/public infrastructure projects
  • Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, and geotechnical plans
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, equipment production, and field operations
  • Experience preparing competitive bids independently with minimal oversight

The Right Person Will Have the Following Skills:

  • Self-sufficient and highly organized
  • Practical and field-oriented, not purely office/theoretical
  • Comfortable working in a small company environment where responsibilities overlap
  • Able to think critically and problem solver without excessive structure
  • Detail-oriented while still understanding the bigger operational picture
  • Motivated by building something long term, not just filling a role

Preferred Qualifications

  • HCSS HeavyBid or similar estimating software experience
  • Knowledge of Maine DOT and NHDOT work
  • Experience with temporary works, dewatering, cofferdams, or complex access/logistics
  • OSHA 30
  • Engineering or construction management background is helpful but not required
