Job description

Temporary Service Mechanic (Shipyard)


The Temporary Service Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, and supporting temporary utility systems aboard vessels and throughout shipyard facilities. This includes hoses, ventilation systems, air manifolds, potable water systems, temporary fire stations, freeze protection systems, and related support equipment. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand.


Responsibilities

  • Install, route, maintain, and remove temporary service hoses, lines, leads, vent ducting, blowers, and support equipment aboard vessels and on piers
  • Inspect, repair, and test air manifolds, water manifolds, temporary fire stations, and related utility systems
  • Install and maintain freeze protection systems and backflow preventers
  • Support hydrostatic testing of fire and potable water hoses
  • Install quick disconnects, air dryers, rat guards, and temporary utility connections in accordance with shipyard requirements
  • Perform inspections of temporary service equipment to ensure compliance with NAVSEA standards and project requirements
  • Assist with setup, maintenance, inspection, and operation of rental equipment including generators, air compressors, fuel cells, and support systems
  • Support shipboard temporary service operations while maintaining safe and efficient work practices

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of shipyard, marine, industrial, maintenance, or temporary services experience
  • Experience installing, routing, and maintaining temporary service hoses, lines, ventilation systems, and utility equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret ship layouts, drawings, and work instructions
  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items and shipboard temporary service requirements
  • Experience using hand tools, testing equipment, and material handling equipment
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification
  • Current WAF training or ability to obtain required shipyard certifications
  • Ability to work aboard vessels, in confined spaces, elevated areas, tanks, voids, and active production environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Navy vessel repair, maintenance, or modernization projects
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Items 009-07, 009-08, 009-24, and 009-28
  • Experience with temporary fire stations, hydrostatic testing, air dryers, and manifold systems
  • OSHA 10 Maritime or OSHA 30 certification
  • Experience leading or training junior mechanics

Additional Information

Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas. Exposure to industrial noise and environmental conditions is expected. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies, and respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs. Reliable transportation is required to report to assigned shipyard or project locations.
