This role will involve supporting our team of technicians and designers and utility clients by developing reliable system solutions, performing advanced engineering analyses, and guiding teams through project execution. It will play a key role in technical decision-making, quality assurance, and mentoring less experienced technicians and designers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design overhead and underground power distribution systems (typically 4kV–35kV) for new projects, rebuilds, relocations, and system improvements.
  • Perform pole loading and structural analysis for wood, steel, and concrete structures, including joint-use equipment.
  • Prepare construction packages, design drawings, BOMs, and material/cost estimates.
  • Utilize engineering design software including AutoCAD, MicroStation, PLS-CADD, O-Calc, SpidaCalc, and/or Pole Foreman.
  • Conduct technical studies including power flow, voltage drop, load evaluation, fault analysis, and device coordination.
  • Ensure compliance with NESC, NEC, RUS, utility-specific design standards, environmental requirements, and safety criteria.
  • Partner with project management, construction, permitting, and utility stakeholders to resolve issues and maintain design accuracy.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, peer reviews, and quality oversight to junior engineers and design personnel.
  • Participate in field walkdowns, design validations, and construction support when needed.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills, making them an invaluable asset to our team and ensuring the smooth, compliant execution of key construction projects.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The employee may be required to stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop, and kneel
  • The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods
  • The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds
  • Travel throughout the region is a core component of this role. Applicants must be willing and able to travel frequently to various job sites as assigned.
  • This position may require working more than 40 hours per week

Requirements:
  • Experience with electric distribution line design, structure modeling, or line routing. Electric transmission experience is a plus.
  • Field, construction, or utility operations experience.
  • Experience in resiliency, grid hardening, storm response, or wildfire mitigation.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 3–5+ years of electrical distribution design and engineering experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and PLS-CADD
  • Proficiency in pole loading software (O-Calc, SpidaCalc, or Pole Foreman).
  • In-depth understanding of NESC/NEC standards, utility practices, and distribution construction methods.
  • Familiarity with GIS and WMS platforms or distribution modeling tools.
  • Ability to develop complete, accurate, construction-ready design packages.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
