What is a temp nanny?

A temp nanny is a childcare professional who provides temporary care for children, usually for a short-term period such as days, weeks, or a few months. Temp nannies are often hired to fill in when a regular caregiver is unavailable, during school holidays, or for special events. Their responsibilities include supervising children, preparing meals, engaging in age-appropriate activities, and ensuring the children's safety and well-being. Temp nannies may work in the family's home or accompany the family on trips, depending on the arrangement.

How does a temp nanny typically integrate into a new family's routine on short notice?

Temp nannies often need to quickly adapt to each family's unique schedules, parenting styles, and household rules. Upon arrival, it's important to communicate openly with parents to understand expectations, children's routines, and any special needs. Temp nannies should be flexible, observant, and proactive in asking questions, ensuring a smooth transition for both the children and the family. Building trust rapidly is key, so maintaining professionalism and reliability is essential when working in these short-term assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with child safety protocols, CPR certification, and scheduling or communication apps is typically required. Patience, adaptability, and strong communication help build trust with children and parents in new environments. These skills ensure the safety, well-being, and positive development of children while providing reliable support to families on a temporary basis.

Job description

AUSTIN, TX – An exceptional, fully staffed private family is seeking an experienced, professional career nanny to provide dedicated care for one preschool-aged child approximately three days per week, with regular weekend availability. This is a unique opportunity for a career nanny seeking an outstanding work-life balance while becoming an integral part of a warm, highly organized household that values professionalism, consistency, and child development.

The schedule will average 36 guaranteed hours per week, generally consisting of three approximately 12-hour shifts, including consistent weekend coverage. The family hopes to establish a relatively consistent schedule, with some flexibility as needed and advance notice whenever possible. This is intended to be a live-out position, however private accommodations are available during working days if desired, making this an excellent opportunity for exceptional candidates commuting from Houston, Dallas, or elsewhere in Texas.

The ideal candidate will primarily care for one preschool-aged child as part of a two-nanny team dedicated to her care, working collaboratively with involved parents and the family’s broader childcare team. The household also employs two experienced ROTA nannies who primarily care for the family’s younger child, so the successful candidate should be comfortable working within a collaborative and highly professional childcare environment.

Responsibilities include creating engaging, developmentally appropriate activities, supporting early childhood education and language development, transporting the child to activities as needed, accompanying the family on occasional travel, and maintaining child-related organization and routines. The household is fully staffed, allowing the nanny to focus almost exclusively on childcare. The family particularly values thoughtful enrichment through reading, play, classes, outings, creative activities, and other experiences that encourage curiosity, independence, and learning.

The family is particularly interested in candidates with a strong educational background and a genuine passion for early childhood development. A college degree is strongly preferred. Mandarin language skills are highly preferred and would be a significant plus, although exceptional overall experience, professionalism, judgment, and personality fit will take precedence.

Candidates should have previous experience working in private homes and be calm, proactive, highly organized, emotionally intelligent, discreet, and comfortable collaborating closely with involved parents and other experienced childcare professionals.

This is intended to be a stable, long-term career opportunity and is particularly well suited to an experienced nanny who values a substantial professional role together with a compressed three-day schedule.

Compensation ranges from $50–$55+ per hour, depending on experience, with 36 guaranteed hours per week, overtime where applicable, and a comprehensive benefits package.

  • BA/BS COLLEGE DEGREE | AA IN RELATED FIELD OF STUDY | OR A MINIMUM OF 5+ YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL NANNY EXPERIENCE
  • UP TO DATE FIRST-AID & CPR CERTIFICATION (WILLINGNESS TO RENEW AS NEEDED)
  • THE ABILITY TO MAKE A ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT UNLESS APPLYING FOR A TEMPORARY POSITION
  • A PASSION FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN
  • 5+ YEARS OF CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE IN ANY FIELD
  • EXCELLENT WORK AND PERSONAL REFERENCES
  • U.S. DRIVER’S LICENSE (THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO NYC RESIDENTS)
  • MUST BE A COMPETENT SWIMMER (IF AND WHEN REQUIRED)
  • NON-SMOKER
