Job Title: Torch Cutter

Job Description

This role operates an oxy‑propane torch to cut, trim, and prepare metal materials in a fast‑paced, open‑air industrial environment. The position supports general yard operations, including sorting, moving, and staging metal, and may involve operating heavy equipment such as skid steers, front loaders, and CAT machinery. The work requires strict adherence to safety protocols, accurate measurement of materials, and the physical ability to perform demanding tasks in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate an oxy‑propane torch to cut, trim, and prepare metal materials to specified dimensions.
  • Examine and measure metals to ensure they meet required size, tolerance, and specification standards.
  • Identify different types of metals to ensure proper processing and cutting techniques.
  • Assist with general yard operations, including sorting, moving, and staging metal materials.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as skid steers, front loaders, and CAT machinery, with training provided if needed.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting on heavy equipment to support safe and efficient operation.
  • Apply shop math skills to calculate measurements, quantities, and cutting requirements.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use and report any hazards, damage, or malfunctions immediately.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, lifting, and working in various body positions throughout the shift.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in the yard and around equipment.
  • Work effectively in a fast‑paced environment while meeting production and quality expectations.

Essential Skills

  • Hands‑on experience using an oxy‑propane torch or similar cutting tools for metal cutting.
  • Ability to identify different types of metals by appearance, properties, or labeling.
  • Previous experience in metal processing, scrap yard operations, or industrial environments.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as skid steers, front loaders, and CAT machinery.
  • Proficiency in shop math, including measuring, basic calculations, and reading measurements accurately.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting, bending, and working in varied body positions for extended periods.
  • Strong awareness of safety practices in industrial and yard environments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced setting with changing priorities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with sheet metal and scrap metal materials.
  • Work in heavy equipment troubleshooting and basic maintenance.
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Willingness to learn and operate additional heavy equipment with provided training.
  • Attention to detail when measuring and cutting metal to specification.
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic in a production‑driven environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fridley, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $25.00/hr.
