BENEFITSAt the beginning of each academic year, all professional expert, short-term, substitute, and student employees with an assignment which will exceed 30 days will be provided with five days (40 hours) of paid sick leave. This paid sick leave is available to be used for an illness of the professional expert, short-term, substitute, and student employee or his/her family member and/or for leave due to domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. A professional expert, short-term, substitute, and student employee shall be entitle to use such sick leave as of the 90th day of employment. The five days (40 hours) of paid sick leave do not accumulate.
General Description/Summary
General Description/Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of Grants, the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Tutor will conduct tutoring sessions, study groups, and individual tutoring for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement students. The responsibilities include maintaining the MESA Study room, organizing materials, arranging check in/check out of students, attending meetings and training sessions as needed.
Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree or Junior level standing in baccalaureate degree in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, or other related degree with extensive math coursework including calculus
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues and barriers facing first generation college students

Required Experience
  • One year of experience tutoring adult learners in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, or biology
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience working with small groups
  • Experience developing or adapting instructional materials

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time, related professional experience working with students in a college environment
  • Bachelor's degree in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology or related degree with extensive math coursework including calculus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

  • Conduct tutoring sessions, study groups, and individual tutoring for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) students.
  • Maintain the MESA study room and its material.
  • Check in/out students.
  • Attend meeting and training sessions when needed.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, cultural background, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.

  • A selection committee will review application packages of those candidates who have met the minimum qualifications for this position and will select a limited number of qualified candidates for an interview.
  • Each candidate may be asked to make a presentation on a topic of the selection committee's choice. The candidate will be informed of the topic when an interview appointment is scheduled.
  • Each candidate may be asked to provide a sample of his or her writing ability just prior to the interview.
  • Travel costs must be borne by the applicant.
  • Final candidates for faculty, management, and supervisor/confidential positions may be interviewed by the Superintendent/President.
  • If selected as a finalist, the candidate permits the District to contact the current and former employer(s) to investigate past employment history.
